There is an event later in the game that addresses this, but IMO you're better off disbanding her squad and just adding her in as your healer to some other squad (you can't do this until a certain point in the game though).
I read in another thread someone made her basically a roaming healer squad, just throw a few more healers and a couple tanks so she doesn't die immediately, then use her to top off your other squads in-mission. Seems like a decent enough plan, but I never found the need for a roaming healer while playing on normal difficulty.
After her side quest to become a Paladin, I made her part of the front line, gave her magic barrier, then placed a unit of gunners in the back to do damage, creating a strong phalanx.
When I got her bonded with Abigaile, I dispanded her squad completely, making her one of the two paladins that protected Abigaile and her 3 dragons, while being much stronger and cost much less than a regular paladin.
In the mid chapters though, I have her with 2 hospitaliers and 1 valkyrie up front. Now she's up to 4 heals per turn and she moves around 7 squares for being a cavalry unit. NOW, she's really useful, cause when I say she can heal 4 times per turn, I mean other squads.
Also, enemy units tend to target her a lot. If she can sustain that first volley, All 4 units are healers... So it's a good tanking unit.
