i'd say the only time using an item like that is a WASTE per say is if you use it on a squad you end up not using. or a squad with tons of leadership. so for eg. i'd not use it on the MCs squad. they end up rolling in leadership in all my games.
the answer will also likely change if they update the game in the future to include grinding. i dont know what the level cap is currently, but if you can gain more levels and possibly manipulate leadership stats by levelling leader characters then this whole leadership bottleneck will become less of an issue.
one last question...
how do i class up the MC?, shes currently at max captain rank...
most of the other main chars (chars with portraits) allow me to class up/down but MC doesnt :<
im gonna take a wild guess and presume they are more tied towards the "story progression class up rules" ? instead of the "class up via training/level grinding method ?
i'd possibly keep the medals until a unit starts to fall behind the other units in terms of squad numbers. whats happened in a number of my campaigns is, at least 1 character out of sybil/jules/barnabus will start lagging behind. they can no longer successfully attack enemy units. they lose engagements. and i spend the map either running to temples with them. or just mopping up the stragglers with them (which i don't think contributes as much to leadership growth as beating a full unit).
this causes a snowball effect whereby my strong units soak up all the combat and get bigger (and therefore even stronger) and some squads get left in the dust like toddlers with wooden swords.
the dev did say there will be plans to look at the system in the future to make it easier for leadership starved squads to catch up. until then we just need to try and balance the squads out as best as we can
barnadus is a pretty sweet unit for a good amount of time
having a vanguard row full of cavaliers him in the middle, and a hospitaller
makes for a pretty nice combo, of speed, tankieness and recovery :)
(just used the proof of merit on him and gotta say he looks pretty darn cool in gold :> )
thinking if i can save them all up and use them on all the portraited main character leaders it make it easier to see them, give them uniqueness and makes them look cooler :P
altho im having a bit of trouble trying to class up MC and diana :<.... its not letting me for some reason
I just realized after getting the tech "Grand Army" that i should have used the majority of my Medals of Valor before getting the tech... because they're almost useless afterwards.
Luckily I had a save that I could just reload, but I would have been frustrated had I not realized in time... just a word of warning.
It increases squad capacity, not unit leadership. I had a Beatrix with 59 LEA, got grand army, and still got 2 LEA from using a medal on her.
