Champions any good?
They cost more to upgrade, but from the description they seem like weaker versions of Zweihander...? Do they get a bigger stat boost or something? It almost seems like the two units got swapped...

champion hits a single unit twice, whereas the zweihander hits all units in a row once

I see. So maybe a bit better as a leader killer. Still seems like a lesser unit for a greater upgrade cost?

Champions have insanely high stat mods and single target damage
Rock Jun 13, 2022 @ 5:59am
That makes sense. I was wondering if they had a stat mod bonus.

Yeah champions have something like 15% STR over Zweihanders in my experience. The Zweihander ability to hit a column is nice, but sometimes you want to melt down a single unit and Champion wins there.

It honestly depends on what each group comp is and what you want them doing. They both have a place in your army.

Are melee damage dealers such as Champions and Zweihanders viable in the hardest difficulty? I keep hearing that people put tanks on the front-line instead on the hardest difficulty.

They're effective as front-liners assuming you aren't swinging them into multiple continuous battles. Might have to be supplemented with artefacts and a healer to tank though.

I would almost always rather have a swordmaster instead if I’m spending obsidian. SKL is the best stat, it boosts offense and defends against physical (including bullets which champions suck against) and magic. Although I see heavy infantry is getting buffed, I’ll try them again then.

I've belive Slayer Alphone can pretty much show how strong champion can be,last time i got him he was 40 lvl and have str 102 of str just imaging giving him dark attribute he boost nearly 120 and one good trait resol or mostly cold blooded how hard he hit.

For me is my version of Zelos

I just got Alphonse! ;)

Who's better - Alphonse or Renalyn?

honestly in my opinion it all depends on your squad set up
both champions and zweihander rip enemies apart but in different ways

to be champions seem to be the perfect focused targetted attackers
(make short,,,and i mean SHORT work of taking out enemy leaders if used with target leader tactic)

Zweihander are more tailored perfectly towards AoE attacks
(100% of the time the 3 Zweihander's i have set in my squad with a {Zweihander} focused Slayer Alphonse tends to blow away every single vanguard of 3 sentinels the enemies use,
leaving them to mop up the rest of the squad with the second turn,, by that time the left over healers....if any in the rearguard surrender from pure fear XD)

for the last .....10? battles ive the 2 following squads nn all my battles leading one of each clusters

Slayer Alphonse (Gold Zweihander focused)
3x normal Zweihanders
2x archers

Renalyn Steelheart (Gold Swordsmaster)
2x normal swordsmasters
2x (currently) acolytes

{-its a shame we dont have a Zweihander version of the swordsmasters (the female champions, but o well :), -}

i was lucky to get them both at some point,,, i forgot when... but i tell you they have lead my vanguards since i got them and they have let to get ko'ed
<as with my last post, both are good just depends on how you use them,,,
with the swordsmasters info being all atk zero def, ive put a vanguard of shield walls in front of them, and with the champs/zwei's having at least some defence to them, ive stuck them at the front, with archers in their squads in the rear =)

Hmm, so Alphonse is better as Zweihander? I have a role-play rule against changing class of story characters or unique mercenaries though. But if he's that much better as Zweihander, I may have to re-consider! ;)

(shrugs)
like i said :) i suppose it all depends on how you use them / match them up,
i already had a champion should, so i figured i'd go with a 2nd sword as zwei's

i got slayer some time after i got steelheart

as for the role playing :),
ive been doing roughly the same
been tweaking my squads to fit roles id be placing them in, then promoting only each squads leader as to give them a more telltale appearance, aswell as to stick to the whole
"a competent leader with novice soldiers can beat a incompetent leader with veteran soldiers" thing

that aside.... its a shame that nibbler and <spoiler>...lets just call her/him? the azure one... :P <spoiler> doesn't have their own unique looks :')

Yeah they are good for damage but i prefer tanks in my front row. Dealing enough damage is never a problem for me , its taking damage and still being combat effective. You can put them mid row but then you are competing with mages and dragons.
