Proper use of Dragons?
What is the most optimal way to use them now - given that they take two tiles but are weaker than 2 units overall?

For instance, is it best to use them in a 3-Dragon squad, so you have 6-unit squad overall and flying? Or just sprinkle them in singles per squad and use them as tanky mages?

They are reserved for flying squads for fast access to distant shops/locations or to grab flying-only chests. That said, I usually have one powerful dragon Hit Squad with 3 dragons, 2 Paladins and a healer. Its generally strong enough to blow anything up, and defensive enough to hold important chokes.

Why 2 Paladins? Assuming the Dragons are at the front, I understand you'd want a Paladin for damage reduction to the healer, But wouldn't the extra back slot be better used on a damage dealer? That's how I run flying Dragon squads.

Aside from ability. They take up 15 CAP and use 2 Spaces. Now , 2 Loyal Single Space Units take up 8 Cap each for a total of 16 CAP.

So you save about 1 CAP over the most loyal units in the game , besides hero units with bonds.

I run my dragon squads differently. Paladins in the front to guard the squishier dragons and a healer to keep the squad alive.

Not quite since there's a big penalty cost for units over 5,6,7,8. So it's actually much cheaper to have a single dragon over 2 units.

Dragons fill the wierd gap between LDR tiers allowing more units. Ideally, every squad should be 9 classes, but until you reach that point there's always the gap when you can't quite add a full other class but you still have space so you can essentially "upgrade" one of your existing to a dragon.

I really like 2 Silver Dragon + 1 Paladin up front with 2 healers and 1 Fire Dragon in the back.
Beatrix is also strong as a flying unit, especially if you can recruit the unique Dragon Rider super early in the game.

There are unique mercenaries (with quotes instead of class information). One of them is a Dragon Rider, and becase you can recruit unique mercs really early on from Bazaars you can get them very very early.

I knew about the unique mercs, i didn't realize you could get a dragon rider real early in the game, though.

If you're REALLY lucky. But if you find him early on it's unlikely you'll have the 10k to splurge on him.

I got her? on my list in like, chapter 4 or 5 or so. The one right after Stefan. She's more like 13k or so if i recall and I just didn't have the coins. I had quite a bit saved up, but even if I sold all my artifacts I just couldn't do it. Much regrets.

Hmm, I mainly use Ice Dragon Riders, and they all get Beacon, so there is no need to baby-sit them. As I see it, Dragons are not cost-efficient, unless you get them to BOTH tank AND damage, because they cost 2 slots. So it's natural that they ought to do the work of 2 units.

That may work for silver dragons, but for blue and especially red dragons, they just don't have the defenses to survive like that.

I agree regarding Red Dragons; so I don't use them. But Blue Dragons also seem to work as tank/DPS - at least at Captain difficulty.

Dragons arent for tanking and I use tanks up front with dragons in last line. Dragons are second best after cannons imo. I pair dragons with cannons and tanks regularly with 1 healer. Ideally Id like a light or fire mage with a dragon and 2 cannons, 2 tanks and a healer. Aoe damagers are king over high individual damagers.
