How exactly do Charge attacks and ambushing work?
Are there other requirements needed to perform charge attack and ambushes that aren't directly stated? For example I'm in Chapter 10 and my Barnabas is over 7 tiles away from most enemies. In fact he is exactly 7 tiles away from one yet when I try to attack any of the enemies the charge icon does not show up. In the same chapter there are three enemies in the woods that are right by the start so I attack with my light units to ambush. Yet the ambush icon does not show up for any of them either. In fact the enemies on their turn proceed to ambush my units. Can anyone please explain this?

I believe Charge requires the charging squad to 1: start on an Open terrain tile, 2: end on an Open terrain tile, and 3: attack into an Open terrain tile. If any of those tiles are Woods, Towns, or Hills, the charge won't go off.

Similarly I believe Ambush requires the ambushing squad to be in Woods, Towns, or Hills and attack into an adjacent Woods, Towns, or Hills tile. If you happen to be in an Open tile and attack into a Woods tile, you won't get the Ambush because you're in the Open.
That can't be true as my Barnabas was on a grassland tile moved to a grassland tile and attacked an enemy on a grassland tile and it still didn't work. And for ambushing both my units and the enemy unit were on a woods tile and it didn't work either.

For Charge, without any techs or artifacts of any kind that affect it, you need to travel at least 7 tiles as well to initiate a Charge, in addition to all other requirements.

Barnabas was moving over 7 tiles in this instance
I'm not sure about charge, but for Ambush your squad that can ambush must start in ambush terrain then - it must attack an adjacent enemy (who may or may not be in rough terrain) or move and attack an enemy that is also in rough terrain. You might want to read the Ambush section and charge sections in the in game "Tutorial and Info" which is a little mis-titled and should be called the game manual.

Were all 7 tiles Open terrain, and are you sure Barnabas actually moved at least 7 tiles? Also if he did move over 7 tiles, did he move his full movement? It may be that you have to use 7 movement points and not just move 7 tiles, in which case movement over roads would make you need to move even farther before you can charge.
I think Charge needs to be done in a straight line. i.e all 7(6) points must be spent in one direction. If you spend 3 going North and 4 going East it wont go off.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me through this. I missed the part where it says I had to start in rough terrain to ambush so that solves that problem. And for charging after doing some testing. I realized all my avenues of attack happened to cross "rough" terrain (walls and stairs also stop charges as I found out they are considered defensive terrain not considered open terrain) I wish charges where properly explained in the info list. Also no it doesn't need to be in a strait line. I hope this helps those who are also confused
It would be nice if you control the path your unit takes instead of having it always take the shortest path. It would make it much easier to make use of Cavalry Charge.
