Seems like a problem post patch 1.02 (spoiler)
In the side quest Dragon's Haven, you have a goal to prevent Azuros from falling below 50% hit points.

1) Main problem: I did not meet that goal. In fact, Azuros survived with only a very few hit points. Yet in the post battle summary, I see the goal marked as achieved, and 30 stars awarded.

2) Other problem: As currently balanced, I do not think the player can have any effect on Azuros surviving or meeting that goal. No matter how I had used my special powers, Azuros was going to be in serious trouble very quickly. And it appeared to me that the game kind of cheated to keep him alive.

Fair enough. But my item #1 remains, and that is the main problem here.

It'd be amusing if there was a typo in the coding and the goal is actually to keep Azuros from dropping below 50 HP instead of 50%.

Very beatable. I struggled too at first, replayed it like 2-3 times, then I bum rushed with my most powerful unit, teleported, double turned and I think by the end of turn 2, I was close enough that all units stopped rushing Azuros and instead focused my uber unit way ahead all alone. It was easy after that and no enemy unit got within a mile of him.

I pulled in the main force at the bridge, teleported a heavy cav unit behind enemy lines and then rushed them towards the dragon with a double turn. They got pretty battered, but it worked.

I sent a dragon rider squad over the mountains straight towards Azuros, then used that unit to tank everything that went after him. 3 Dragon Riders plus healers make a pretty powerful tanking squad that has excellent mobility.

These problems are still present. In the Azuros mission, the Challenge is completed even if the dragon falls far below 50% (in my mission he only had 33 health left and I still got the challenge bonus). The balance is still off as well as he was down to about 5% health after only 2 enemies had reached him and before any of my units were able to get there, even on the easiest difficulty.
