Right click the Anvil entry or shortcut name in steam; choose PROPERTIES; add -dx11 in the Launch options window; close the properties window. Should be good to go then.
And in my earlier demo experience it then ran fine on Windows 8.1, and I didn't feel like it was running slow or I was missing anything visually.

I'm trying to get the devs to either sticky my posts on this, or they should make their own Stickied forum post to help Win 7/8 players get the playtest working. :)
I think I only knew because some other games I have (Everspace 2) or tried (The Riftbreaker demo) require this too.
I do think I'll eventually move to Win10, I guess I'm waiting for a game that's truly Win10-only to knock my socks off and force me. :)
