Well you can open the fvp file in 7Zip and get the vrms and the graphical assets. But yes maybe sticking to some standards like .stl would be nice.
You can import the avatar into blender with a VRM plugin and then export it as stl, though not ideal its one solution.
Yeah, as i said its not ideal. There really should be an option for that in the software itself.
