How to make a ponytail?

I could just be an idiot (and probably am) but how does one make a ponytail? I've only been able to make hair flat against the head that hangs down, which is nice but I feel like I'm just horribly failing to see an option or another way to draw it.

Hair Editor > New Freehand Group > Adjust Mesh so it's extends and is away from the head. Possibly shorter.

The rest is just messing with the stroke settings till you get the desired effect.
