I am wondering if there is anything I can do to reduce the occurrence of this issue.
Oh gosh, that sounds painful to deal with!
I'm not sure if it's the same for you, but thanks to asking a friend of mine to see if the same issue I am dealing with happens to her, I've roughly narrowed the possible issues to ones with my computer specifically or just my copy of Vroid cause she was able to pull open the hair editor without any issues.
I'm wondering if I've possibly got out of date drivers or some sort of script vroid runs on not being up to date, cause honestly I don't know what else could be the possible problem, so maybe that could be the issue for you?
I think it creates 1 copy per hair set (Front, back, ect.) Best thing you could do is to delete the inactive duplicate hair textures.
As far as I know, the duplicated hair textures VRoid makes really slows it down over time. So you may want to check if your textures/ materials are being duplicated by the hair editor. I could be wrong though.
I have narrowed the "Not responding" issue down to when I switch tools or first click a hair group so I've been able to work around it by working with a tool or section at a time. It still happens but I was able to create a new hairstyle at least without too much lag time.
Go to the Presets and set the hair to the blank one temporarily and delete the material that showed up when your back hair was equipped. You can reequip it later without issue.
Like if I only have the front hair that I will edit, remove your other hairs, clear the inactive materials, you'll be fine as the program creates them on load.
