Steam does not seem to support the mixed reality
Anyways, I was able to launch/play Demeo only on Virtual Desktop. Air link would crash on launch and never load up. I also checked and did not see any option for mixed reality in the steam version.
If you buy the game you should be able to enjoy it on any of your devices.
So that's bad news and I won't be buying the game until they fix this
This, they need to bring it over to the Steam/PCVR version. I don't believe they're restricted by Meta to do so because Virtual Desktop itself has the passthrough/MR functionality.
I don't feel it's Steam's fault. SteamVR lets you set Oculus as your OpenXR runtime. The SteamVR API and Oculus API communicate through OpenXR. I'm not sure how it works for Unity (Demeo runs on Unity) but in Unreal Engine, camera/passthrough functionality is supported. My impression is that SteamVR will output whatever it receives from OpenXR to your headset (which OpenXR receives from the game engine). Simple diagram visualizing it: https://www.khronos.org/assets/uploads/apis/OpenXR-After_6.png
The developers just need to push a build for their Steam-version package that includes the functionality. It could be the case that they didn't develop Demeo with OpenXR in mind and separately packaged the Oculus and SteamVR versions without OpenXR. It's not impossible to add OpenXR support after the fact.
