Its a 4x game, there is a plot about the world and the neutral factions, playable factions have a few quests, there are generic quests too. But there isnt a campaign mode, its more a scenario with random elements inside an intriguing post apocalyptic world about aliens, rogue AIs, cult from another dimension etc...
AoW4 is a sequel to the earlier AoW games the previous iterations of which had story campaigns and therefore, the lack of a proper story-driven campaign is distressing for those who expected the new game to have such and that's fair.
Zephon has no such feature as did neither of the studio's previous games, Pandora or Gladius. It is like the Civ franchise or any number of other 4X game which do not have campaigns but are played as a unique 'campaign' all of its own.
Songs of Conquest is fun but you've probably already noticed that the new DLC faction has no such campaign either. I actually miss that as I expected that from SoC. The campaigns really introduce you to the factions, their casters and their units.
No, this game is more like gladius + civ beyond earth.
Age of Wonders: Planetfall is a 4X with a proper campaign (2 missions for each faction + one final map, and then each DLC also has an associated campaign) and probably closest to what you're looking for. AoW4 doesn't really have a campaign though, and as far as I know the olders do but I haven't played them so can't comment.
While more traditional, Endless Legend features a "Faction quest" which is unique to each faction and can be quite important and run-defining (though the balance is questionable for some of those) so you might want to look into it.
I assume most of them are either teenagers, or perhaps there is a big langage barrier. You don't like the game - garbage. Doesn't have x feature - complete trash. No updates - game is dead. Fun times. Very common on steam forums.
Hyperbole also serves to antagonise posters on the other side of the argument so you can probably get catharsis from the fights with the other side.
I really hoped they would have a "real Campaign" in Zephon.
So it's probably not a Game for me, I guess.
