Why are Japanese gay games always written by a woman?
It's disrespectful and hurts representation.
引用自 Bishi:
I said my piece and I will leave it at that. Toughnails, this is why most BL games from Japan are written by women. They don't care about authentic story-telling. Most of these games and the medium as whole tend to not acknowledge any real world issues gay people face, especially in conservative countries like Japan. Ones that do, like Shimanami Tasogare, largely get ignored.

P.S. Ukes are just female stand-ins. Role, demeanor, and hierarchy are the same.

You have no idea what a 'huge issue' even is. People like what they like and should make whatever art they want. How about you mind your own business instead of fixating on other people's sexuality?

I think maybe they were not emphasizing that in such a way that you imply, but I suppose that's understandable about your response.

Mm, the point I was making was not that women can't consume gay content, just that they shouldn't fetishize gay men. There's a significant difference and I'm not trying to police what media other people consume.
I understand some straight women consuming gay stuff cos, well, if you like dudes, and there are two attractive dudes, go figure. I just don't want that to have implications for gay men who're just tryna live their lives. Cos no-one's interested in being your fetish n all that jazz

As long as it doesn't shove politics down your throat, who cares? Don't like it, don't buy it.

Who cares if it "shoves politics down your throat" You can just avoid buying those games too. People are free to make games about whatever they want, regardless of if it has politics or not.

If a video game was enough to cause someone to dehumanize people IRL, then they have bigger problems that have nothing to do with the game. Do you go around killing people IRL because you did it in a game?

Yeah, as I said, it's not an inherent problem with pornographic and gay content, it's mostly to do with the fandom and societal influence. I'm a fan of this game personally, I'm just tryna point out the need to be mindful and, though most people already are without having to consciously think about it, there's still a problem with fetishization in some of these fandoms

You are fine to like what you like Chai, however you are a fool to think you are one of many gay men that like this drivel. I'm actually amazed you played this and were only bothered by Virus and Trip. When Mink and Koujaku both have dubcon in the core paths, and is ironically pretty tame for Nitro+, considering their past games. I'm pretty sure there are some women out there like Rance games but I wouldn't say it was made with them in mind. Like at all.
You guys are acting entitled. These games are not made for gay men. They're made for girls who like boys love stuff. It's sexist and entitled to tell women what games they're not allowed to make and that they have to make games to cater to you.

Yee like thats really what i'm just trying to say about this game, no matter your gender or sexuality, this is really just a piece of media meant to be enjoyed, and the sexuality or gender of the creator doesnt matter either. Just appreciate it for what it is jhhhggnggnhh

It's mainly because yaoi/BL is catering towards a female audience. I totally understand what you are saying because unfortunately there are many harmful tropes pushed onto characters in yaoi manga and games. Generally "bara" is known to be written by men for gay readers. Bara is also known to address topics in current society such as persecution of LGBT people, shaming, and other issues. I think there are many hurtful consistent tropes like non-con and extremely feminine 'ukes' that need to be addressed, but I doubt they will be because this genre is lucrative when marketed towards the large amount of female consumers.

I do hope that there will be more realistic representation of gay relationships and there genuinely are some good ones already. I'd honestly love to read them.

Why don't you go write it then. You talk about this as if people simply writing stories is immoral, as if they're attacking people by writing literal fiction. 'Needs to be addressed' - Addressed by who and in what way? 'tropes pushed on characters'? They're fictional.

This is my sexuality?? I'm mlm. I've not fixated on anybody else's sexuality, the fetishization of mlm fixates on mine though

I don't know what you're trying to say here. You don't even know me and you say I "have no idea what a 'huge issue' even is." Chill out man there's no need to get this heated I just wanna stop getting teenage girls ask me and my boyfriend to kiss for their entertainment

Do you have any evidence that happened due to video games, or any sort of media? You're making the same argument evangelicals made about video games back in the day. What I'm getting heated over is the idea that people making fictional media are somehow responsible for whatever happens in society. It's a tired, failed idea that's simply an attempt to find a scapegoat for whatever issue you have.

Even ignoring all of that though, no one is required to write the fiction you'd prefer, nor is someone doing anything wrong by writing whatever fiction they want.

Read what I've actually been arguing this entire time. I'm not blaming games, I love these games. I'm blaming some of the toxic fandoms. The games are great, I want more representation. I just want the *people* to stop being pervs. Again, don't know what you're getting at here n you continue to make some wild assumptions

The actual problem here is the DRAMAtical Murder has been incorrectly tagged to a staggering degree on Steam. It's a yaoi/BL game - it's not intended for a gay male audience. It's also not an otome game. Steam has mechanics in place for users to help fix tags I suggest we all employ them.

Ok now this slightly rubbed me the wrong way for some reason...

"It's a yaoi/BL game - it's not intended for a gay male audience"

So wait, are you saying these games are meant to be exclusively for females? That... seems kinda ridiculous to me. The ONE genre of VN that gay guys get which actually somewhat represents them (even if it's a fetishized, over-exaggerated version of them)... and they're not supposed to enjoy or feel included by it?

Back to the topic, I get the OP's frustration, but honestly I'm just glad for any sort of representation. And I'm pretty sure the writing level for BL/yaoi in general must have improved since the last 12/13 years. This is an ooooold game, so we can't hold it (or any of the other old BL VNs) to today's standards.

I think you meant to say "your" standards. Not everyone believes that every game has to cater to self-inserters.

This was an incredibly aggressive and childish reply to a post that I thought was very insightful and well-explained. Yes, it's fiction but in a culture like Japan where LGBT+ is still taboo to this day, repeated negative and unrealistic representations can still be harmful.

Calm tf down.

^ Firstly, re-inserted my entire sentence rather than taking that small part out of context and attacking it like you did.

I wasn't talking about self-inserting. I have no idea where TF you got that from, as it's NOT what I was talking about.

I meant in terms of general unrealistic/potentially harmful representations of gay men, rapey scenes, whatever problems these very old BL/YAOI VNs have, hopefully those kind of issues have improved in the last 12 or 13 years.

I'm not saying those issues were there just because of female writers, but they're a result of society/Japanese outlook on LGBT+ in general, and maybe PARTLY because that's what the writers believed the audience wanted.

So no, at no point was I talking about self-inserting, but go off and continue being rude.
