Just in case for others: in the main menu, go:
Play -> Humans ----> then just move the slider to chose 1-4 players.

But, yeah, UI could be more clear and dev is aware of it - it's going to be improved by time.

If you have good ideas how the GUI should work so that it would be easier, but all the numerous other options are possible, too, let me know :).
