- 2 Steel mills producing iron spooles
- 1 Steel mill producing copper spools (switching to gold when I have enough copper spools)
- 2 Production lines producing steel plates
- 2 Production lines producing crates size M
- 2 Weapon factories producing weapon parts
- 1 Weapon factory producing the K98 rifle
- 3 Cement factories (1 for crushed stones, 1 for cement, 1 for prebuild walls if needed)
I have at least 4 Productions lines built, so that I can use 3 of them for weapon production and one for other things like cables, pipes, steel profiles, etc if needed. This gave me enough weapons and concrete to at least stall the fronts.
Also: This will end up producing more than needed but as the timings aren't really balanced you currently can't sustain a constant output without overproducing some goods.
Later on I switch to producing Flak guns (1 Flak gun = 1 day) but I have issues to sustain a constant coal supply even with advanced mines as there aren't enough and rich enough deposits, even deep down.
You need to have gold smelting unlocked in the tech tree and a steel mill to smelt gold ore into gold. You need a very high supply of coal and gold ore to sustain a decent production of gold. With only a single gold mine you won't get enough gold ore. Build at least 3 or 4 and/or upgrade them. Same goes for coal mines. You can never have enough ores in your storage.
1 K98 gives you 0.2 days. With the setup I mentioned above you should get at least 12 K98 and good amounts of concrete. In the time it takes to send it to one front you should have produced another 12 K98 + Concrete for the next front.
I typically do it with a T1 setup of 1-2 Upgraded Gold Mines, 2-3 Upgraded Coal Mines, 1 Upgraded Iron Mine, 1 unupgraded copper mine and 2 upgraded stone mines.
You will have gold issues before reaching T2, so you just start producing the stuff you need tons of anyway in your production halls (I typically build 2).
Like Cables, Iron Plates, Rebar, etc.
I then rush for Advanced Mines and start pushing out a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of advanced gold and coal mines. This gets me the gold production required to get finance research for explosives and research hand grenades and mines.
This is where I actually start to push at the front line. Build a weapons production that just ♥♥♥♥♥ out concrete mines and hand grenades while researching for stuff like artillery and flak.
I tried another run on hard dfficulty (beta branch). So heres my strategy:
Try to get a good map seed. Before you build anything, take a look to the very bottom, right where the supply tunnel ends. You might get lucky and get all the needed resources in in a relatively small area and in large quantites there. If this is the case, build an elevator right down to the very bottom. It'll cost you much at the beginning but it'll pay off in the mid/late game.
Don't spam to much mines at the start. Stones, gold ore and coal are more important than copper ore and iron ore at the beginning as you have enough iron & copper spools. Before you get worker quarters you have to micromanage the first mines you build. For example: You need 10 (or 20) kg of copper ore for one of the very first techs. So build a mine, get the ore, take out the workers, put them elsewhere and disable the mine to save electricity and water. When you have some more workers you can be more relaxed about that.
Also in the very beginning you only need 1 cement factory, 1 production line and 1 steel mill. The steel mill is important to smelt gold ore into gold. Don't expect to much output from this but it'll help a bit. Micromanage these facilites for your requirements in resources. You'll struggle to get enough cables to unlock the first techs for producing weapons, so focus on getting the tech for producing cable spools from wood.
In the meantime try to produce some amounts concrete (thats why stone is important) and buy yourself only a bit of time by sending concrete to the fronts. Maybe you need a second cement factory for that.
If you done it well enough you should be end up waiting for for the supply trains to get enough gold for unlocking Tier 2. Don't stress yourself with the remaining days!
The first thing you should do at Tier 2 is reseaching automated mining (requires uranium ore) and unlock the advanced mines. These require a lot of electricity and water but they'll pay off. Try to get a decent supply of coal and gold ore to get more gold. Besides this expand a bit into getting iron/copper ore for producing iron/copper spools. If you have a shortage of cables then you might need to smelt some copper ore into copper spools and produce some cable spools.
The next thing I'd recomment is to go for the flamethrower tech (I'll explain later) and unlock advanced water pumps and generators. Yes, this requires a lot of gold but you need them to unlock the chemical labs. Don't forget to set up at least 3 additional production lines for producing crates (Size M) for the flamethrowers. You should end up with 4 productions lines (1 producing steel plates, 3 for crates).
Meanwhile you should have build a weapon factory to produce weapon components. These are quite cheap so store them in large quantites. Then set up 2 additional weapon factories for producing flamethrowers. If you have you chem labs unlocked, produce chemicals. If you done well you should have enough gold to produce at least 200-300 liters of chemicals which is enough for about 40-60 flamethrowers.
So why flamethrowers: Compared to other Tier 1 weapons (K98, etc.) those are quiete cheap to produce and they are produced fast (which is more important I think). 12 or 14 flamethrowers should give you 3 days for each front. If you have some concrete to spare, also send it to the fronts but don't send all.
I had only 4 days left before I crancked out a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of flamethrowers and pushed back all fronts. This is essentially the break even point. From there you can be very relaxed about the mid/late game. Just wait for other trains giving you gold and/or produce it yourself.
It might be possible that run into a resource duplication bug in the command center. If you send some weapons to the fronts it might be the case that those weapons remain in your storage so that you can send them again. I don't know why this is happening (and yes it's an exploit) but as you can't really do anything about this, you can push back the fronts even further.
