"all property is theft", eh?
always enjoy a bit of communism-teaching in my game. I won't forget that, bethesda.
they always seem to try to make you feel guilty about - well, literally everything.

i don't believe that's what was said. "so da na" is more like 'right' or 'that is so', meaning, yes he stole the item, not ALL PROPERTY is THEFT. Is it really? I had no idea. "Red is Blue?":jawaevil:

If I remember correctly, KK actually says "さあ、な/saa, na", which is a vague expression that, depending on the situation, can mean "well...", "who knows?", "maybe you could put it that way", "figure it out for yourself" or "take your pick". It's an expression that you can use in response to a statement which you neither refute, nor agree with.

Translators are often forced to be creative and to take some liberties, but in this case, the translator has just replaced a vague comment by a character with a political remark of which there is no trace whatsoever in the original Japanese dialogue.

Well..im not sure about the communism. This exact phrase was used by French anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. If anything, it adds more depth to KK, further making impression of chaotic character. Original phrase was not about personal property or labor-gained wealth (which was specifically stated), but about the right to use the land as a property. Ironically, he later was heavily criticized by "the big commie man himself" - Karl Marx.

It's even funnier, since in Chinese translation it says something along the lines "A world belongs to the people", which is much closer to commie ideals than this sentence.

This is still very interesting take on translating neutral response that KK gives in original.

surely a character thats interested in the occult and pals around with a squad of subversive characters would never say such a line ;). as far as localization choices goes it isnt as radical as it seems. the alternative typical literal japanese dialogue of "uhm, erm , yes well, erm, well then" isnt particularly engaging in english where the speakers aren't used to beating around the bush. this is the challenge of translating a language severely lacking in profanity and a culture where most of ones true feelings are implied through context clues, body language, etc. Sometimes someone's "yes, well..." is closer to "what did you just say to me you little b**ch" in american

I picked up on this, too. They're getting more and more brazen inserting their commie propaganda anywhere and everywhere.

The localizer responsible is likely some ignorant twenty-something, but this made it past QA, producers, and the Sony first-party approval process. They're either complicit or incompetent.

The reality of communism is that nothing is for the people, it's all for the unelected "representatives" of the people. The people live in literal squalor while the party officials live in luxury.

lol it's a fictional character's offhand statement that no one is telling you you should agree with, in fact its assumed your character DOESNT agree with KK in general. the question is not whether it's a true statement or whether you believe it is true. the question is whether it is in character or out of character for the fictional character in question. to judge if the localization is succesful, see if you are feeling what the devs want you to feel vis a vis the character.

the devs stated in an interview they want there to be some 'push and pull' between your character and KK. so my guess is the person localizing kk wanted to give him some spicy takes to make him seem like more of the difficult parasitic companion he is intended to be, because that antagonism comes off very 'soft' in japanese to american ears. so "property is theft', says the person who just took ownership of YOUR BODY without your permission. sound like the neighborhood anarchist helping himself to your fridge?

personally I don't think it's unimaginable that a gruff, paranormal investigator might riff on some fringe ideas in conversation. if you want more evidence to judge for yourself, the entire prequel visual novel is about him and his weirdo ghostbusters.

if you are worried about being subliminally influenced by KK's lines, you might wanna turn off subs for hannya's scenes and go find jesus and repent for consuming animistic literature

That's why I'm learning Japanese OP. In fact I picked up on this because I understood the voice line. I do think I'll have to quit videogames eventually though, because of ♥♥♥♥ like this. Really the only form of media I still consume besides books.

Firstly no media is safe, second it has little to do with the plot and events of a game. Is everyone so thin skinned now.

It has nothing to do with being thin-skinned. My attention and time are valuable. I will not waste them on consuming content made by people who act against my interests. And you're right - nothing is safe, but life in general has few absolutes.

What are you talking about, that comment has nothing to do with the main story or any of the other content. Also what interest it’s a fictional character making a simple comment.

You are in the right, here. There will always be people damage controlling propaganda like this.

I don't think you understand the situation here. I'm the customer. You think it's my job to rationalize the issues their product has?

I do because I played the game, it’s a comment that’s it. You are “rationalizing” skipping a game over a comment.

Yeah I played the game as well. But you're right - I stopped playing because the gameplay's ♥♥♥♥. The yapping about backward 19th century ideologies is just insult to a 60 dollar injury.

The gameplay and the plot have nothing to do with a throw away comment .
