the game is not really linear & you have lots of freedom, which ends up at times quite confusing if something is missing.
i would advice not to concentrate on the quest where you miss a thing but try to progress in any other quest. usually after some time thigs start to fall in place everywhere.
The algae is located in the second area in The Village by the large lake behind Harold's house.
Also, the devs have ABANDONED this game. They got it 2/3 of the way done, skipped the final TWO rounds of bug fixes, didn't bother trying to optimize it so it runs TOO HOT and has a tendency to cook CPUs and GPUs both, and it has a terrible case of "memory leak" if you play more than about 90 minutes in one sitting. So don't expect ANY response from the devs about this game ever again. They took all the early access money from this game, forced it into full release half a year too early, and then poured all that money into their next game which is built on the core from this game and includes a lot of bug fixes and extra features that were PROMISED BUT NEVER DELIVERED for this game.
