You can DROP or RECYCLE any item at any time (preferably not in combat):
1) Press MAP hotkey (I prefer setting to 'M' and "Tab" as secondary )
2) Click ANDROID on the Upper LEFT MENU BAR to open the "ITEMS" menu. Don't ask me why they hide the ITEMS menu within a cryptically labeled "ANDROID" menu. :p
3) By each item, click DROP ITEM or RECYCLE ITEM icons as needed. Obviously, if you have NO items, you'll see nothing there. :)
I don't use a controller, so I can't speak to how to reach the items menu using one.
I remain annoyed we don't have a simple one-click ITEMS INVENTORY hotkey; and also agree with others the above should be briefly explained to new players in Tutorial or maybe via explanatory screen the first time you play S2.
Also annoyed at the whole picking up an item auto-drops an item from your inventory etc. and I agree we should be able to see item descriptions on items-on-ground without having to pick them up.
All sorts of confusion happens in co-op when you drop an item to try something because fellow players will mistakenly think you're "discarding" an item.
And if you're wondering why they dropped S1's simple "drag and drop" kb/m item inventory management it was to make it easier to support the limitations of controllers, which have to use more of a up-down / left-right thumb sticks or shoulder buttons menu navigation. That's the cost of trying to make everyone happy, is that you don't. :D
