how do you lockpick?

I am a prisoner in a ship but need to lockpick myself out, I literally dunno what to do when that white/green circle happens.

I had to use the left and right mouse buttons, timing it just right so the tumbler reaching the top when the indicator flashes green. I could be doing it wrong, but this approach worked for me.

I'm not sure if the cell is the same lockpick mechanic as chests, but the green circle mechanic is that you want the the tumbler to lightly touch the top, you can't just fully charge and slam it up.

If its the same mechanic, then its like this: The longer you hold the key, the higher you reach. first hit the green bar until its gone, then slithly touch the top with not too much speed. it needs to hit when the circle is green. It needs a bit practice but it can be done.

For chests you also can pay an npc to open them for you.
