Favorite weapons?
Just curious, what are your favorite weapons for the ship? I'm a big fan of the guns that ignore shields and only damage crew (swivelo, lemoner, carronade or something like that). I like to just focus fire on the mage, if they have one, then the most dangerous enemy weapon. The guy working it will die than get immediately replaced with someone else who dies. Unfortunately this tactic falls flat when dealing with undead. I've got a single one of the blue/green cannons that does great upgrade damage, but only a little ship damage. I use that to ultimately destroy the goblin res point or the ship as a whole if I can't take out all the enemies.

I really love the combat in this.

I use 2 stun guns, and combo of the hull breach gun and electro barrels to kill all bottom crew. However, feel like that needs some changes

The humble one-way barrel.
Nothing better than having five screaming, bloodthirsty pirates ripping apart the enemy crew :D Sadly doesn't work all that great for the undead ships.

As for ranged weapons I simply love the parrot-bombers because they provide decent damage that ignores shields (and look funny carrying those bombs :fadehearts: )

The legendary ice mortar because it fires off 3-4 shots and freezes enemy crew and or makes them waste time breaking the ice chunks it leaves behind. I'd take as many of those as I could get but they take 4 slots and have to be on an exposed deck.

2nd choice magma cannon, it's good at destroying stuff and the enemy crew has to waste time putting out the fires it makes.

3rd choice demi cannons for their decent health / potential to destroy enemy weapons and decent reload speed, those are the least important though and I'm still experimenting with replacing them.

Most of my ships look like this atm : ( I have the blue / red and undead one currently )

I also like the trained eagle and the monkey guard, but when I have to choose one or the other I go with the guard, that way I don't have to target enemy barrel rooms and can focus on destroying more of their guns.

My fourth ship is same basic set-up except I have 5 of the crew-killing guns that fire off 5 random shots( but cant be manually aimed) and one aim-able one ( I forget the name, it's the one that reduces reload time every time it fires) I can target on a room I want to kill specifically, like the wheelhouse / healing chamber or mage room... I HATE when enemy mages use magnet. Having 6 of the aim-able ones would probably be optimal but I'm too lazy for that

I would prefer to use the combo of the crew killing guns at all times except not only do you run into an unwinnable fight vs a big undead ship, but same deal if the enemy ship has that resurrection alter. Killing crew without destroying ship is optimal but you lose morale for retreating if you run into an undead or resurrection ship and that can suck if it happens a few times in a row in the rogue-like mini game battles.

Honorable mention for slime-mortar, if I could fit it in I would but it's more then one slot and also has to be on exposed deck. No room for it on those ships top deck.

Also as an aside, the resurrection speed needs to be toned down (both for skeletons and the alter), it's fine if they have it but 5 seconds is too short for that effect. It makes crew killing almost impossible on the largest enemy ships.

EDIT : this is my crew killer actually, guess I have 4 gren and 2 lemoners

Altar is ok, as it can be destroyed by boarder and only ressurects at 5 hp (ie one-shot vs dedicated melee sailor). Skellies hard-counter boarding as they ressurect at full hp and big boarding team of guys (with maxed hp, damage and luck) that occupied all rooms of mid tier vessel were unable to wipe-out weak undead crew. Boarders took all rooms and there were more of them than skellies - no avail.

Some weapons like flabber and squidward do not need to reset/fire really fast

You're not wrong about the alter, but it comes back. You cant keep it down 100% of the time and that also means you need to have a cannon capable of destroying objects instead of killing crew. Also if that ship has a shield you need multiple actual cannons, also it's usually on the goblin ships that have that floating wall that blocks attacks.

I personally just think it needs a longer cooldown before resurrecting people. Your opinion is still also valid though. Sending boarders does sound more effective then blasting it though.

Also undead are immune to most status-effects.

I've never tried dedicated pure anti-crew gunboat. As you already mentioned, mixing anti-crew guns with anti-equipment does not work due to how shields work. I used Swivelo (no aim lock) + Boarders, so altairs and other problematic rooms were usually disabled by boarders. Undead, submarines and kraken were a true roadblock though. I had to get full alt-setup for brute force cannoneering.

So far most effective gunboat setup for gunboat is this:

Crew skills are like these (not optimal) because half of the crew are former boarders.

Don't think it got a name :)
You can find it (and the other two battleships) in the 4-skull difficulty missions.
Look for the ones with the orange flag.

Make sure you have a chance to beat it though, the big ships are quite tough.
