Powerful Ship Combos
I wanted to make a list of powerful combos for ship combat in game. So far, I've found the following to be REALLY strong:

1) Fireballs + Squidwar Cannon or Squidalicious Cannon
The fire ignites the poison cloud for big ship and big crew damage. Very strong on top decks. Big boom.

2) Solid Rock + Lemoner Cannon
Slap some walk speed and a little reload speed (I found 2 or 3 enough) on the Lemoner, and you get yourself a machine gun. Its weakness is how easily it gets destroyed, but Solid Rock ain't got no flips 'bout that. Bonus points if you mount that on Mo Mo G's tiny ship and mow down even "hard" difficulty crews with your tiny dingy.

3) Captain + Potion Lover + 1-Way Barrel
Sending your character over to the enemy ship with high attack damage and Potion Lover devastates enemy crew even if you're trying to blow up the ship with cannons. Not sure how being thrown overboard works, but even if your captain's flailing in the water after sinking the ship, you get him right back. Also works with the Small Healing Room. I like this strategy with Balder Bruce on deck for more boarding action since he can 1-Way Barrel over, then retreat back to ship for healing.

4) Hullbreaker + Drake Cannon
2 second load cannon that punches holes into the enemy ship. It kind of acts like crowd control since the enemy will be spending most of the time plugging holes. Overpowered if it can be stacked with Sharpshooter or Solid Rock.

5) 3 in Intelligence
It seems 3 in intelligence is the minimum requirement for crew to never accidentally damage upgrades they use onboard.

6) Master of the Wheel sailor at the helm
Flee from any battle at anytime and remove the threat from the map. Very strong if you want to scout battles with zero consequence, or remove a problem ship from the map.

Are there traits that are unique to some characters? If so, a list of those would be very nice as well!

No, these are the random abilities sailors and your captain can gain at lvl 2 and lvl 5.
The cannons and upgrades you can craft, loot or buy for your ship.
So far, I found these sailor traits are semi-random and can be save scummed to get. I also read from other players on the Seablip discord you can get an NPC from somewhere to re-roll stats and abilities for sailors

I've been trying to see if traits that modify shots, such as Fireballs, have any effect on guns that fire a barrage of shots like the Granada. Thus far, it seems like such traits do nothing with those guns.

Yea, Grenada only harms crew and Fireballs seems to only trigger when hitting the ship in places without water. Grenada seems pretty good with Sharpshooter, I occasionally got 5 hits on 1 target with that
