One thing I did notice with the howitzers, if you're close to them when you attack then the crew will exit the gun (presumably due to being inside minimum range). So you can stealth up to it, force them out and then kill them allowing you to save the gun for your use.
Exactly, let's hope that at launch they will add the ability to kill crews stealthily,
MGs on the other hand are great on that map.
You can definitely see that developers did not intend for you to kill the cannon crew and then use that cannon/mortar. But YES, you can.
Kill all enemies that are close to the cannon. Then tactically position your men in stealth mode around the cannon. Disable stealth for one of your soldiers so he can start shooting the cannon and its crew. That will make the cannon crew leave the gun. Pause the game, order all your men to stop hiding, and shoot them. After killing them, immediately stop the game and order everyone to hide again, because even an empty cannon is still counted as an enemy until manned by your men.
Choose two soldiers, man the cannon, and enjoy the power. Some missions are really fun with cannons on your side.
The solution to go loud is possible, but rather terrible for obvious reasons (being loud, chance of still taking hits by gun crew, sometimes the gun just explodes after 2-3 shots...)
This can only be an oversight - but then, the "howitzers" have so little range (which is understandable because else they could just clean the whole map).... but still...
