You are playing as the "good" guys. The Legion tried their best to stay out of the Russian civil war, and certainly wasn't raping and pillaging their way across Siberia. Who, exactly, do you think the "good" guys in this game are supposed to be? The Reds? The atrocities they committed are well documented and acknowledged by historians, and the Whites were hardly any better.
The legion are mercanaries that came to fight for emperor that kept people in serfdome for 500 years while he and his clique lived lives in luxury. Once people finnaly broken free from tyranny those mercenaries instead of surrendering, as any foregin army should do when caught inside enemy teritory, they decided to steal and wreck havoc on already troubled land just to save their sorry asses
They are not heroes they are just mercanerys saving their own asses plundering their way across russia
Even if they were "plundering their way across Russia", they only did that to survive. Surrendering to the Reds would have them end up in a Gulag and die, or just be shot outright.
The Russians could have just let them leave, but they didn't, so any havoc they wreaked was of their own making.
Can't exactly blame them for wanting to return home and not die.
If they stayed home in first place they wouldnt be in that situation, but they obviously loved to make emperors biding plundering and exploiting russian serfdoom
No compassion from me for them, they were dogs of war
What that have to do with anything?
They still come to other country as mercanaries, and after defeat instead of surrendering they continued to kill, plunder and burn. Even if bolsheviks were devil himself they at least be devil in their own country not some hired thugs
any factions fighting the Bolshevism were worth supporting, regardless if they were evil or not, because it all paled in front of Bolshevism. (but very few knew it back then and no one could predict the history)
and they were not the only foreign legion in Russia at the time. Big and small players alike were in Russia all over the place (the British, French, in a lesser extend, German troops were intervening. After 1919, US and Japanese troops were stationed also, and the usual weak country, China at the time were officially in the Allied intervention too, albeit only in the number of thousands, while the CCP was fighting in Russia for the Bolsheviks) Ironically there were few clashes between Japanese Army and Czech legion. And the Poles....
Russian Civil War was one of the most intertwined civil wars, probably except African nations, everyone else were involved. (even a few from Latin American nations got involved...) It is bizarre how much could happen in such short years.
Yes we are all aweare of capitalist intervention against peasnats and workers. After all they couldnt allowed workers to create their own society, they were afraid their own workers and peasants could get same idea.
Thats also why there is still western propaganda against bolshevisam, just to turn off exploited workers from capitalist countries to rebel
Similiar situation we saw after french revolution and coalition of feudal monarchies that tried to supress french repoublic. Russia back then was part of such coalition. Ruling elite will alweys slander and do whatever is possible to sustain their own existence, same is true for capitalist countries back in the time of october revolution. Anti bolshevik propaganda is still very strong even today
But just in case you are actually being genuine with this thread, you are playing from the perspective of the 'good guys', and thus, we're assuming that you don't condone what happened to the Romanovs:
- the stabbing/firing squad execution of the Romanovs by the Bolshevik's (noted in Trotsky's diary as having been ordered due fears of a possible rescue of the Royal Family by the Czechoslovak Legion)
- their bodies blown up with grenades to prevent identification
- when the grenades didn't do as good a job as hoped, the bodies were dipped in acid to dissolve them before being buried in a location kept secret until 1989 when the details were made public under glasnost
I don't care for the usual ruling class before Bolshevism, but I am always curious about how the principals of Bolshevism came into shape as a psychology student into the scale of evil. The concentration of the viciousness is so high that no propaganda could even do justice. (because by merely repeating what Bolsheviks did would be too horrifyingly to say)
How did I know? I was a young pioneer at 6yo and how foolish I was to believe that. But it only took me 2yrs to realize they were against the humanity... not 6 years, 10 years, or 20 years like many others thankfully.
I get it that people were horrified thinking the youngest victim being executed was the 13yo Prince.... but 13yo would be above the minimum execution age required by the degree of the revolutionary committee!
Bolsheviks shot too many 10yo kids and rounded up too many 5yo counterrevolutionaries to a point it was just absurd. How could there be 5yo counterrevolutionary?! So eventually they put an minimum age for that, and waited until they were half-old (like 13, 14) for firing squad...
And despite all this, many people really sincerely believe in the Communist party and revolution... I can pull off being such a kind instantly and it terrifies people. It terrifies both those for it and against it, because of the underlying logic behind this. Yet, I certainly I don't know as much as the great teacher Lenin and I really wonder how much he really knew, on top of what he wrote down.
And if you think the poster is unreasonable, not really. Those who speak Russian/Chinese exclusively tend to be far less reasonable and we never have a lot of chances to have a glimpse of them
And they weren't "mercenaries", they were nationalists fighting for independence of their homeland by joining as volunteers with the official Russian army. Most of them were drawn from ethnic Czechs and Slovaks who lived IN Russia and were not some external group, although their numbers were later added to by captured Czech and Slovak PoWs. Even after the civil war began they tried to negotiate with the Reds, who of course broke the agreements and tried murdering them, which directly led to their revolt and joining with the Whites.
The Bolsheviks were by every measure of the word the "bad" guys, as shown by the thoroughly documented and horrific reign of terror and violence they instituted, in a multi-faction civil war that had no "good" guys. The Legion were pretty high on the list of the better actors though.
To common people, such an act is always cruel, but this is the class struggle in communist society so any mercy to the class enemy is the betray to the revolutionary cause thus the person acting such, or even thinking such is not loyal or even dangerous: with the potential of being obstructed by such thinking, the will doesn't bond tightly with the party leadership leaving room for corruption or revisionism! this is very gravely dangerous and it can undermine the socialist achievement, because it is an opportunity could be taken by the royalist anti-revolutionaries!
so liquidating the class enemy is something to be celebrated.... and there is nothing more honorable than this!
This is how differently it can be.... perceived, very differently.
