good luck - have fun
I am not thta good in combat, I try to set up kills boxes but fail, though I have gotten pretty good at steatlh kills for single enemy units
but I can't make money like you describe until I get a workshop car. I am not yet at that point in the game, though maybe when I liberate the Reds train I will be.
Anyway, right now, things are bleak. Lots of hunger and injuries, and low ammo
If I can't come back from this, I would restart even though I prefer not to if I can recover from it
There aren't enough hunting/food gathering opportunites while traveling the railroad
Same goes with food, bring in guys that have the traits that allows you to get more food such as survivalist and hunter. Herbalist for more herbs. Whenever you enter a lake or forest POI. Abandoned house also have a change to get food among other items, so bring in the medics that have housekeeping and burglar traits.
Combat wise, i always go for a stealth kill. So that I won't spent as much ammo or get hit.
Two methods I have had success with:
Get two of your guys and using the space bar pause set up so they both get to stabby stabby at the same time. I think from observation that if you stab near another enemy they will go ? for a bit and then turn around. Your second guy can 'hopefully' get the stab attack in during that first reaction moment and you still get the kill.
Second method is to use a scout with the rock throw. Carefully line up the rocks noise circle zone so you only grab the attention of a single enemy. Kite him into a dark alley. Stab.
In later missions (end of Ch 2 I think) the game introduces long grass that allows you to 100% hide. So you can kite your victim with enough stones past that second character and stab.
Or, if you can get the enemy as far away as possible from his friends you can normally creep up behind him the moment he gets bored of strange noises and turns around to go back to his normal spot.
Takes time but I have had success.
A third way that I have on and off success is to distract them with a grenade.
Timing is important. They will stand around dumb and die in the blast radius as long as they don't see you throw. Throwing from outside their vision cones works. Inside the cone they react and run away before the bang.
Other bad thing is that you really need to isolate the enemies to use grenades. Grenades, oddly enough, make a bit of noise and you can agro a mob if you do not carefully pick your ambush.
Fourth way is the LMG ambush. One of the maps had a patrol of two enemy going up and down a long street. I used the Scout's skill to check out the surrounding area and was confident I had dealt with anyone else in the immediate area so I set up an LMG cone around the corner at the end of their patrol route because I couldn't be bothered trying to knife attacks on the buggers. The guards walk into the cone, go ??? for a second and then get gunned down.
It... sorta works.
I think also in some missions it is worth cleaning out the last few enemy by just getting your squad into a Murder Ball and trusting your overall DPS will solve your problems.
My advice, pass up the workshop car, and go for the kitchen. Have at least 2 cooks working on soup (cycling day and night), since it basically gets you far more food. I have 4 passenger cars basically full in the late game, and have an abundance of food, with 4 cooks working.
Also, don't worry about insulation till around chapter 4 or 5. The start of the chapter will tell you when you should start prepping for winter.
