Machine gun post on the artillery car?

The description says it "provides additional options during some events", but I'm starting chapter 7, had the artillery car since chapter 4 (if I recall correctly) and I still haven't found a single instance where the machine gun post on it is is used.

Nowadays I keep the MG post manned just cuz I have enough soldiers to do so and also I'm genuinely curious about what it does, but wondering if anyone has had a situation where it is used and if it's even worth keeping it manned.

if you let the red bar fill up you get some evets but ther dont make much sens in the way you wod thick you rest the red bar also it cost alot of ammo

When the red bar fills up and you suffer attacks from red forces on your train, a manned machine gun post will allow you to drive away the attack at the cost of 100 MG rounds. It helps you avoid damage to your train cars and soldiers from these events.

Yeah, that seems to be the use for the machine gun posts. Also if a plane spots your train you can shoot it down for 200 rounds and delay the Red reaction.
