Does the merchant towns/hubs have suprises?

As at the moment I dont feel the need to buy anything but I dont want to miss secret events or sidequests if there is a chance to get those from merchant towns.

It's called random events for a reason. You can increase or decrease the amount of random events before you start a game. The 100% is considered the Normal developer intended amount.

Yes, best to visit them all to see.

Always, always, always go out of your way to visit every location is possible. This is for a few reasons. 1, Alot of Side Quests, Hidden Missions, and random encounters can only occur if you go out to the side villages etc. 2, Everywhere you go gets you XP for your soldiers allowing to level them faster. 3, This is how you increase resources and quality of goods the fastest. You can have some level 2 and 3 weapons rather early on in the game if you just put in the effort to travel to all villages. Only don't go to villages if 1, you have somehow hit 100 percent threat level or are having people drop left and right.

You can also make money buying village stuff and crafting items from it. Prices in the villages are better than prices in railroad stations.
