Use Howitzer?

I came across an unguarded howitzer cannon. However I couldn't figure out how to use it. The only option it gave me was to sabotage it. Is this correct?

No, you can use it, but you need targets within its range. As far as I remember, there are some pieces or artillery that simply need to be destroyed, though, so the game won't let you use them.

hmm. the Howitzer I came across was on top of a hill, unguarded, and not a mission objective. However when hovering my mouse over it the only option a soldier had was to blow it up if right-clicked. How do you use it instead of blowing it up?

Were you in silent mode? I think the default action is to sabotage when in silent mode.

Also note that some equipment (such as artillery) require multiple soldiers to use - so sending only a single soldier won't appear to do anything in those cases. The UI isn't all that clear sometimes.
