At least an auto-pause would be nice. It seems like a pretty critical notification/situation update to just slip it in there amidst the chaos of battle. This is the third mission I didn't realize I was being timed. Yeah I can reload the save but it kinda slaps the taste of of my mouth when a scripted event takes a cheapshot at me like that.
The game has pause for a reason. In most cases I find it's a good idea to split up two five man teams. In this mission send a squad to the deserters to clear them out while getting the other team ready to defend the main attack. Once the attack starts, provied you been fast enough (and again, you can use pause to issue orders), the other team is probably on the way back. You can use those troops to man the arty cannon for the upcoming waves.
With the overhead map it sometimes puts the player on a timer. But I've managed to search every location on the way without being pressed for time so far. It's the cold that will affect you.
The moment you see a timer, pause the game. Think. Plan. Get troops into cover overwatching each other.
