I still cant afford a new train car:/
and ive tried not to buy much.
In hindside it was worth it as the game doesn't give you the opportunity to earn credits for your major spendings (train stuff costs awful lot of credits). So you are bound to sell stuff - and as you can't "go back" you have to take every opportunity to improve your gear. Having said that, you should only spend money on train components and emergency buys (like e.g. food if you have none left or fuel).
I wouldn't recommend buying anything else. Even higher tier weapons aren't worth credits IMHO. Some you'll get from new recruits and at the end what gets the majority of missions done are not weapons but your trusty scouts which just kill everyone with riflebutts.
To afford a new one from Moscow onward is not too difficult. It sort of depends on what you are willing to go without for missions.
There's one town along the way to the first depot that has 15,000 cash and that is only one of the stops so you can scrounge the funds together.
Doing some rough calculations, buying materials then making bullets is a little more expensive than making bullets with materials you find. It is still cheaper than simply buying bullets, even with avarice.
It may be worthwhile to buy if you mean to craft
Only in villages off the railroad tracks and with a soldier who has Avarice Trait in the squad of course.
Right, good point - forgot about that. Had like 800 rifle rounds and sold them down to 400. Gave a huge chunk of the cash needed for the infirmary car.
Craft pistol bullets and sell them to towns. You will need a workshop car for that.
I just posted a guide that will cover this topic.
