A clumsy beginner's guide to starting Normal.
If you fail miserably at fighting roguelikes like Hades or Dead Cells but still want to try this game, here's how to minimize sweating and frustrationquits.

It starts with rolling character with immediate maximum convenience (the chances are you're going to quit before getting to "endgame" so save on suffering right now). Choose appearance you like, take "Kind" (Be nice to people? Yep. Turn seven lethal? Nope.) and go to next page where you are going to...

Roll and lock "Disciple of the Three Pure Ones" (mandatory because of large Insight bonus, the more Insight, the easier skill learning minigame (you can sweep the orbs faster by holding LMB)), the second pick can be newly introduced Spirit Sight for luck and boons, third whatever to not roll forever, look for toughening picks and extra agility, running faster is always good. Keep rolling until getting the highest of all martial/spiritual stats in Blade or Fist. These two arts provide, respectively, lifesteal or shield renewing between areas. Blade is all about waving it around charging into enemy's face, great for fighting monsters and awful against cultivators, Fist is a midrange option you have to aim a bit.

Start the game and choose the Eye of Providence to see all around you and not waste time exploring. Bagua Jade is useless on Normal as you will revive for free anyway and allied cultivators will spam revive as well. Pokemon Gourd is nice but having Beast skill from Golem or Dangkang on low cooldown to oneshot elites is better, faster, stronger.

Finish the starting area and start going about your Heaven Foundation II breakthrough.
Pro tip: if you encounter events that look like "main story" (I'm looking at you, Three-Legged Crows!), ignore them until much later or it's gonna hurt!

Another mandatory tip: always be nice to people. Especially to the Unicorn! (Payout on saving him is immense). That will spare you from lots of conflict and make lots of nice Righteous people to like you and send you items and skillpoints (through Spar, Debate and Dual cultivation; always accept all of these).

For perfect breakthrough you need 6 Qi and 3 orange treasures from Lands of Spirit.
Best way to find them is to activate Psychic Charms (bought on town market) to cover all Yong Ning.

Remember to always do a material request and monster sweep missions in every town you visit, these are easy, fast and will keep your spiritstones up. The rest are much harder, especially cultivator assassinations (remember: no lethal!) and are generally to be avoided.

For getting Qi you either need to kill a boss in elemental area, or wander it with Monster Lure charm on to get 100 shards and combine them in town's workshop. Advance to Late stage before doing it and stock a couple dozens consumables. Use them out of battle to not spend focus, you shouldn't be getting dangerously low in those battles.

Orange treasures are straightforward: go to the Land of Spirit, pay 500 spiritstones, pwn the boss. With Blade or Fist you wont be running low on hp when you reach him, so it should be easy as you likely have already learned dodging some skillshots.

Store valuable stuff in Tree Vault the moment you get it, thieves are rampant and you are at the bottom so you are very unlikely to deliver them a beating even if you catch them.

Save before breakthrough and if you went anything but Blade you are going to reroll (and save reload) until you get Blood Power I. Keeping health up is what keeps heartbeat down and tears in.

After the breakthrough, upgrade your purple+ skills with Epiphany books, learn some Foundation II skills bought in city and apply to sect with your main art and Righteous alignment. Second is more important than the first. You should be easily pwning the competition by now.

And that concludes my clumsy beginner's guide, the rest of the game is up to you and your mostly intact resolve (due to following these carebear tactics).

A way to easily get thousands of spiritstones early: kill bosses in elemental areas as they appear and put their treasures on auction in the city. You can also do Lands of Spirit and Arcane again after they recharge.
