I think it's more about "growing together" than actual relationship. Your relatives (let's call them that) will sometimes gift you some things. I already got manuals from relatives, that can be useful to you. And they will ask you things that will help them to grow. They can stand up for you, but I'm not that sure about when.
But I don't if there is more to it than that...

As Harbard said, they will gift you some useful manual or elixir. Also Dual cultivation might be great too.

When fighting with enemy, if they are with you sometime, he/she will take on enemy for you. I have Stage 7 Partner when facing enemy stage 4, my partner fight for me that's fun to watch also.

My guess is for world immersion. Have family and friends who you can grow with and interact with and all. I believe in a dev post they said they never want to delve to far into making the game a "life sim" but you also don't want it so you can't interact with any of the NPCs in a meaningful way.

Friend will join battle during one on one. So partners and sponse are mainly for dual cultivation. Best get those higher level then players to get more benfit.

They'll also help stopping your enemies from killing you, and risking becoming enemies of those linked to you that are stronger than them.

I check a potential partner's relations. If she is the member of a big, numerous clan I'll ask for marriage, since this will significantly increase affinity with the her whole clan family. Otherwise, concubine she stays.
