Other you can try your luck at the annual auction in the main city of a region to bid for a skillbook of orange or red level. They are very expensive though and you will likely not have the necessary skill developed enough to use them early on.
Last if you join a sect you will be able to trade red skillbooks at their manual tower - hopwever you need to be of high enough rank in the sect and have completed a lot of missions for them to be allowed to purchase one.
Paragon/Heaven Chosen means that the characters have received a Taoist seed from somewhere - you actually start out with one yourself (the 'Nameless') and can gift nameless seeds to other cultivators once it reaches 100% growth. Chose wisely whom you give it to.
The taoist seed/soul will allow cultivators to learn a special skill whenever they break through to a new rank. It also gives you some passive buffs as long as it is undamaged.
Your taoist soul can be damaged by being defeated in battle (not sparring) by another cultivator and being humilated afterwards. So if that happens too often your taoist soul may break (I don't know what happens then but it might be a game over).
They are also good money at auction once you don't need them anymore. Also, world bosses respawn sometime after death.
And it seems one of the best way to obtain red skills is to be part of a sect. I have found purple items in Ruins, and all of them were Spiritual skills, but that's all.
They don't let you go cheap as everything costs more as you move to new areas.
If you are on the 2nd realm of that region, you can always try stealing from people after an auction. Be sure you can beat them in a fight though.
I took a new mission from the Sect in the 2nd main area which was to acompany another disciple looting a ruin.
So the job had two options being the one who searches for treasure and being the stationary target for attacks or being the one on lookout and fighting off attacks.
I chose to be the lookout.
As soon as the mission started enemy cultivators started swarming in without end.
The guy who was supposed to do the searching bailed out after 5 seconds and ran away leaving my cultivator to fend off the undending enemies with an unfinished searchbar.
Luckily between waves of enemies there were 2-3 seconds where my cultivator could continue the search bit by bit. The whole battle took forever and if the bloodclaw hadn't stopped working at 20% health it might have gotten pretty nasty for my cultivator. (The enemies themselves barely did any damage at all, just interrupted the searching.)
Btw. I can't recommend picking the bloodclaw fate - it sucks health even when no enemies are present and my costs for vitality pills have skyrocketed thanks to it.
The flying sword skillset is much better as far as I can tell.
But I also noticed the sect had 10 000 prestige points, so either he chose a powerful sect, either he grinded enough missions to accumulate that much points. Or both. But I think he grinded though because his character had all his spiritual roots at 50.
Extremely important. Undervalue defense at your own peril, as well as the affixes mres, sres, and crit manuals can have.
