Haha
actually
grave robbing is much more serious crime than "normal" robbery in all countries today and 4k+ years ago (and in chinese fantasy)
In regards to what is going on, consider it like this: A good, righteous cultivator who was famed and renowned would have been buried in a special tomb created by their sect or family line. Even just a righteous one would still have been given a decent burial, even if he never really got anywhere, as he was still respected by his peers for being a good person. Their remains wouldn't be out in the middle of nowhere in the wilderness, forgotten by all.
The tombs you find in the wilderness, then, are just most likely the graves of demonic path cultivators who died friendless and alone, cursing the world as they died. They were so obsessed with their worldly possessions that they demanded that they be buried with them instead of being passed on to others as family or sect treasures.
As such, their spirits would no doubt still be bound to the material world, and would be greatly angered by having their graves defiled and would not hesitate to curse you for it. So, losing max lifespan is the manifestation of that curse.
That's not fun.
The graverobbing is only worth it to get rare metals for forging artifacts, that's it.
