To be fair their 5 civs put together are probably less unique than the 2 variants we're getting, so I wouldn't read too much into that comparison.

This is similar to "we're getting 2 DLCs this year". Their 5 civs together is like 1 of the new AoE4 variants. The Knight Templars have at least 9 unique units and a unique building. The English variant has a couple unique units and a unique building. The difference is in the optics - that their civs aren't called "variants", but the content size is roughly similar. And we are also getting a 2nd DLC in half a year. We won't have to wait another 1.5 years.

The problem is they've painted themselves into a corner with AoE4 by giving each civ unique unit voice lines for every age, unique music with every age and game state, unique skins for every building and unit, even base units. This makes it harder for AoE4 to release civs, whereas for AoE2 it's just slapping on a unique unit and some bonuses, maybe add a unique Castle skin, and be done with it.

So in conclusion, even though our DLC is crap, theirs is still crappier. And we need to look at things more in depth, because considering our game is twice as small, we are still punching well above our weight.

thats not true anymore, check the aoe2 patch notes,
chinese now have like 5 unique units alone, and regional skins added so they no longer looks copy and paste, and 25 new castle looks for all civs so all castles looks different

That's true. But last year Relic got ditched by SEGA and had to downsize massively.

I try not to compare the games, as they're different teams and frankly very different games. Congrats to AOE2 players for getting their DLC, my condolences to AOE3 players for missing out on theirs. My Sympathies to AOE1 players with a dead game.

We're getting some DLC which I'mpleased about, I imagine most people will ultimately like most elements of it.

AoE1 lives within AoE2 - which is perfect, AoE1 received formations, and QoL uptades from AoE2
Age of Empires II’s latest update has changed the appearance of monk units across different continents and regions, distinguished the visual upgrades of unique units in Ages III and IV, introduced brand-new animations, differentiated castle appearances, further subdivided the five Chinese factions, and added new campaigns and units. The next major project for Age of Empires II will be to differentiate and modify the appearance of generic units across different continents and cultural regions.

Meanwhile, Age of Empires IV has suffered from slow updates due to the studio’s chaotic project management, the developers’ stubborn decisions, and poor operational strategies. The game now faces more issues, with messy code and broken AI logic.:steamsad:

I'm not referring to the new civs, I'm referring to the balance chankes and reworks for Chinese and Koreans.

But yes, AoE 4's civs are more detailed.

That's just cope for slacking off tho.
