Base game has more single-player content. Most of their DLC adds single-player content as well.
The AI is also better.

There's so much content in AoE 2 focused on singleplayer. If you get all DLC it has 37 campaigns, and that's excluding Art of Wars, Historical Battles, and one off scenarios.
AoE 4 has one DLC, The Sultans Ascend. It has 5 campaigns with that DLC included.
It doesn't even come close, unfortunately. This is something many of the AoE 4 players would like to have!
As a long time age series fan I have played through the campaigns in every title. If you had to pick one over the other for singleplayer content, it's AoE 2 hands down. But in my opinion, if you like one you'll like them all. You'll probably end up growing your collection soon enough anyways 😉
Normally we see DLC drop in the fourth quarter (October-December), but it was delayed because of the release of Age of Mythology: Retold.
In general, we get DLC once a year. It normally includes new civilizations to play as in skirmish and multiplayer, and has single player content in the form of campaigns or scenarios.
When it comes down to single player content AoE II DE is the way to go if you want the best bang for your buck...
On the multiplayer side of things one can make an argument in favor of AoE IV especially if you are into spastic rush tactics and would like to raze an opponent to the ground no later then the second age(unlocks access to siege and a fair few civs can construct it in the field without the need to have it made from a building) as opposed to AoE II that puts a bigger emphasis on economic development&strategic planing(for instance high ground control offers a bonus to the attack and durability of units&buildings standing on it unlike in AoE IV where it does f all... also projectile weapons can miss in AoE II unlike AoE IV where everything defies the laws of physics and course corrects mid flight to always hit the intended target(yes it is that mechanically retarded of a game) where as in AoE II it takes a fair bit of time(need to advance to the third age to construct any siege engine(from an actual building) before you can raze an opponent.
Age of Empires 2 DE has more campaigns than any other RTS game on the market..
But there is one "but" - most of the AoE2 DE campaigns are horrible balanced - one mission is super easy and second is super hard, difficulty setting is broken - in many cases, standard (bronze) is too easy with passive AI, and moderate (silver) is very hard with super effective AI, in many scenarios..
Achievment rate for AoE2 campaigns are very low due to this
-----------
On the other side, the last AoE2 DLC is very good & properly balanced / designated

AoE 2 is a dated game with copy + paste civs, ugly graphics, no different units for every civ like AoE 4 has, no different buildings for every civ like AoE 4 has, no deeply worked out civs which really represent the history of the real civs like AoE 4 has.
All AoE 2 has are dated strategies which have been played already 20 years ago like the Red Bull Wololol tournament showed again: scout-skirm rush, champ flow and so on - how creative. And the 20 year old abuse of patrol trick was also on board, nothing really changed in decades of "so good" AoE 2.
AoE 4 and AoM wipe the floor with AoE 2 in every aspect.
Dude, I know you don't like AoE 2 but your reply is not at all related to OP's question.
OP said he's not interested in MP, so why do you bring up tournaments in your copy-paste reply?
Because he has to know about the dated design of AoE 2 to make the right decision and buy AoE 4 or AoM. It´s not nice of the AoE 2 community to deceive players to buy their game that´s clearly fallen out of time in every aspect of modern RTS games.
It's funny how you use "modern" and "AoM" in the same sentence whereas Retold is at its core the old 2002 game with some QOL (so, essentially like AoE 2 DE) and some of the AoE 4 players trashed it on reddit for the fact that it's old.
As I said in my other reply in German, it doesn't hurt refreshing your AoE 2 memories bc it also doesn't hurt to extend your horizon outside your comfort zone. :)
AoM was, is and will always be superior to AoE 2 because of its asymmetrical civ design, its extra layer of hero and myth units, its battle changing god powers, its Titans and its overall fun factor.
Even today this are creative and modern elements an AoE 2 will forever miss, so there is no problem with calling AoM modern, compared to the rather basic design of AoE 2.
