It has nothing with a AoE4 "focusing on esport", AoE2 DE is more "esport" than AoE4.
AoE2 is in very special position, it is game originally released in 1999, and it was re-released twice and received 11 expansions since its original release in 1999. That is, why it has so many singleplayer campaigns.
No other RTS has this amount of SP content.
AoE4 has a "standard" amount of SP content, comparable with other RTS games.
Did You play (or finished) "Victors and Vanquished" mission pack in AoE2?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2805510/Age_of_Empires_II_Definitive_Edition__Victors_and_Vanquished/
It is perfect addon for single player enjoyer like You,
With its negative rating - "review bombed", You can see, how the AoE players "love" single player content.
V&V has that rating because:
- only 3 or 4 of these scenarios are new. The rest is content already available in the ingame workshop
- It was originally teasted as a "campaign focused" DLC and ppl see a set of long individual missions not really as a campaign
- the price
You might notice that Mountain Royals also has a rather mixed rating, simply because of the price for the content it delivers as it offers just as much as the first two DE DLCs.
There are 5 brand new scenarios actually :)
The rest is originally from workshop, but updated + with achievments / intro / outro
Anyway, it does not mean, that these scenarios from workshop do not have gameplay value.
That could be possible, V&V is specific DLC, and needed to be presented according to that.
What I saw, many people did not realize, that V&V is a single player "mission pack", and it does not add new civs and were "disaponted" from that.
I also think, that the people refused to read info and think about it before buying.
But Yes, I would call it a "Scenario pack" (or "mission pack" like in old C&C), not a "campaign focused" DLC.
AOE 2 is more eSports ? If have a good amount of competitive scene yes but if you go to custom lobbies you will see a high amount of custom games for noobs, 3v3 and 4v4, s lot of people playing campaign or other game modes
It is. Excluding 4's launch phase with a lot of funding for it, 2 always had the larger price pools in recent years and also the higher viewership.
The big difference here is that 2's esports scene grew organically.
The historical films & the stylized "childish" art-style degraded everything Relic did right in gameplay & sound design, it could have been marvelous!
I did not even finish the original campaigns, they're not interesting, I did not get caught up with the story, I did not get involved with any characters, not as much as I would have if the glorious style had been in the same vein as AOE2.
And to be frank I agree. Give me Vlad Dracul missions, quirky minor factions to play as from which I learn a good bit of history in an authentic manner!
But I guess AoE2 will always have the advantage in authenticity, and content.
AoEIV needs proper new factions, not weird sub-factions with ugly visuals & still no player color selection to make them look good (black player color anyone??) that makes the skirmish menu like a weird mod addon.
Is that a royal "we" or do you have a tape worm?
Also wait for a sale, I got it at 75% off which is the correct price for it.
