Is Deathmatch popular?

I'm a huge fan of deathmatch in RTS games, especially AOE3.

Is there a healthy deathmatch population online? Is there a ranked dm ladder?

There's no such thing as Deathmatch in AoE 4 (yet). I recommend checking out ranked Deathmatch in AoE 2 instead as it recently has been readded

some play it in custom. But its just who can make 200 pop siege first....

Max resources which is more like a death match is 100.000 of all resources including stone, don't know where the devs are when deciding that.
The siege meta turns it boring too.
