I've always thought that game will fail. They had no vision, either for MP or SP, just a few sparse ideas of what was bad in hindsight about SC2. A passionate dev would have many cool ideas that they've always wanted to implement and would not copy 95% of them from other games. It's much more likely they just wanted to make MTX SC2, judging by the fact the monetization system is where most of their ideas went into.
Stormgate is just a crappier version of starcraft 2 with the only "unique mechanics" is the ability system instead of +1 upgrades to attack and defense. And the specials each faction has but those are so lackluster and not fun to use.
While on the other hand AOE4 is similar to AOE2. But in my opinion did improve on the gameplay mechanics of what AOE2 was and to be more modern making the civs more unique where each civ does not play the same. AOE2 has better immersion and campaigns than AOE4.
JUST REMEMBER NEVER EVER ATTACK FIRST, EITHER TECH OR EXPAND OR HARASS HIS ECONOMY IF YOU CAN, LATE ON GET SUPERIOR ARMY COMP AND SPAM CASTLES TAKE MAP AND YOU CAN SEND UNITS UNITS ON MAP TRYING TO ATTACK HIS ECONOMY IF YOU CAN HOLD HOME, BUT WHEN YOU COMMIT UNITS THEY ARE USUALLY DEAD, ESPECIALLY AT START THERE IS NO REASON TO ATTACK UNLESS YOU PLAY SPECIFIC FACTION LIKE MONGOLS, DEPENDS WHAT YOU CAN GET OUT OF ATTACK BUT DON'T COMMIT LIKE IT IS NOT WORTH... IT IS ALL ABOUT GETTING BETTER UNITS/UPGRADES/TECH FASTER AND THEN TAKE MORE MAP AND LET YOUR OPPONENT ATTACK YOU. YOU CAN ATTACK ON TIER 3/4 SOMETIMES AND THAT'S FINE BUT STILL LIKE DON'T COMMIT MUCH BE CAREFUL UNTIL YO UGET BETTER ARMY IF YOU KILL HIS ARMY GO BACK DON'T KEEP ATTACK THERE IS TOO MUCH DEFENDER ADVANTAGE
MICRO IS TOTAL GABRAGE AND TEHRE IS NO WAY PROTECT YOUR CATAPULTS. EVEN AT AGE III/IV KILL HIS ARMY THAN WAIT BUILD CASTLE BEFORE HIS BASE AND WALLS TO PROTECT YOUR ♥♥♥♥ SET RALLY POINT, DON'T OVER COMMIT... YOU WILL THANK ME FOR THIS...
IT IS ALL ABOUT RIGHT COMP AND ENGAGEMENT AND FORMATIONS AND WHAT NOT. YOU CAN PUT SOME PIKEMAN NEXT TO CAPTAPULS ON HOLD GROUN THAT HELPS BUT LIKE MICRO IS TOTAL GARBAGE AND THERE ARE HARDCOUNTERS, IF LIKE 3-6 UNITS ARE LEFT FROM OTHER GROUND IT MESSED AI TARGETING AND CAN LOSE YOU GAME IT IS VERY BAD... AND YOU CANNOT ALSO FOCUS SINGLE UNITS EFFICENTLY AND SOMETIMES UNIT MOVEMENT TOTALLY BUGS OUT AND YOUR UNITS DON'T REACT...
NOT to mention scared places why would you ever attack if you can turtle there... It is not fun but unless you want to lose games after 30 minutes macroing and doing almost nothing before it gets to fun part when you can finally play bit...
If opponent doesn't have Springalds, you can just move your Spears on top of the Mangonel and stand ground and opponent won't be able to reach it. If opponent has Springalds, you need to pull back with your Magonels and make your own Springalds to kill theirs.
Micro is not the focus of AoE games. The focus is on macro and decision making, but there is plenty of micro and a competent player will win against you in a fight easily. Counters do matter because this is a strategy game, not a game where anything can work against anything if you micro it.
If you want a game where you can win with whatever as long as you're faster and more precise, I recommend SC2 or SG instead. But a lot of people appreciate AoE games precisely because micro, strategy, economy management and decision making are much more balanced.
You can play SC2 if you think it's better. To me, SC2 is the most frustrating game I can play. It's nice and streamlined, if flows smoothly and its budget was way above anything that's been made since, and it's flashy and spectacular to watch, but gameplay is stressful, even rage inducing at times. And that was its downfall, that's why everyone ran to LoL and SC2 stagnated up until they introduced co-op and made the game free.
Beastyqt just said he doesnt care about battles, because strategy is all about booming and building. He who does this best, must win. So yeah, he wants base-building simulator out of AOEIV and this will kill it.
PVP community is the one most invested into a game and revived the Age franchise in first place back when the Forgotten mod for AoE 2 was released. It was that popular that MS decided to make it AoE 2's first expansion in 13 years.

Indeed. You can't win by a-moving in this game. Besides all the positional micro, the formation micro, the kiting, the focus firing, there's also plenty units with abilities. You'd have to be brain dead not to realize you need to micro in this game to stand a chance. I mean in plastic league ofc you don't know there is micro.
