No, actually, Company of Heroes 2 has a similar mechanic, and is much more micro intensive.
You basically have two types of units there: Infantry (anything with legs) and vehicles (anything that doesn't have legs). You can prioritize vehicles for things like anti-tank gun, or ignore vehicles (aka, prioritize infantry) which will only engage infantry, useful for machine guns that do no damage to tanks for example.
But what happens, is you are thrashed by units you are set to ignore if you don't micro. It helps, but absolutely can get you killed especially with units that can generally engage both units (tanks for example beat machine guns, infantry, and half tracks).
Setting pikeman to prioritize cavalry would get you thrashed by any infantry, even a smaller force of pikemen. Knights prioritized to archers, yeah has uses but carriers serious risk if not microed correctly.
Hold Fire command, useful for cannons, trebs, springald, etc, obviously has drawbacks if you don't micro properly.
I'm not opposed to adding prioritized unit commands, but it doesn't remove micro to a serious degree. It helps but you absolutely do need to micro.
bc this applies to ALL units... you would want to your archers to shoot units with low armor before shooting the tanks first foe example and the crossbowmen to shoot the cav first...
and RIGHT CLICK is not an option if you would overkill your target 20x times !!!
and before you whine: yeah first i thought, gid gud too and so on.. but if you think about it... its not that unrealistic. the General would probably also yell to the archer in which direction to fire, what to target... and for large-scale troop coutns you CANNOT ACTUALLY DO THAT DECENTLY... another option would be that stuff like archers get a ground-attack style command so you can attack the ground... like painting an area where to attack, and within that painted area they seek their target like with a-move
That's one thing I'd like to see more of in RTS games, less mindless spamclicking and more planning ahead instead.
