Hello, I hope you are doing well and answering your question: the next DLC could include the Spanish, Aztecs and Berbers. These civilizations could be used to carry out 2 campaigns: La reconquista and then The fall of Tenochtitlán.

As for variants of civilizations: there you could make the variant from the Byzantines to the Nicaean Empire, greetings.

The developers said they added the Byzantines and the Japanese because in all the surveys they were always the most voted by a wide margin. If you go to the official forum you will see that right now the most voted are precisely the Spanish, Aztecs and Vikings, greetings.

"As well as a new campaign, by popular demand, we’re bringing two exciting new civilizations to the game. Take command of the mighty Japanese or the illustrious Byzantines! Each civilization brings unique new landmarks, special units, and strategies. The Japanese civilization tells the story of the age of the Samurai and includes special Shinobi units for espionage and assassination."

Vikings made no sense, as a Civ they could barely made the second age, maybe the Normands or another mixed scandinavians/locals sub-civ because we already have Rus, Byzantines with Varangian guard, etc.... Spain should be there one of the bigs and some class of Italian city state with a lot of special features about mercenaries, banking system and alliances with big powers... and my personal choice would be the Hussites, but they are too much about the late game mechanics, still they could have a lot of fun and original mechanics and units Maybe as a subfaction. And another big DLC with the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas or two of them...

Aztecs, Mayans, and/or Incas might get added eventually to AoE IV, but would be surprised if they come in the next dlc if I were to be completely honest. Another possibility is a dlc for Spanish+Aztecs+Incas+Mayans, but it might also be the only dlc that adds four new civilizations due to the fact that more new civilization variants need to be factored in as well in addition to more complex tech trees and more unique units from each civilization on AoE IV than civilizations from AoE II: DE.
