Only game with bigger player-base on steam is... AoE2 DE
Hepefully, if AoE4 will receive new DLCs with more civs, SP campaigns, missions, co-op etc,
Also relic is very sloppy nowadays, always one step forward then one stop backward, literally stalling its own community and the whole genre.
Custom games are the most played after 1vs1 rank. But theres not much else for a casual player. Play the campaign might like multiplayer or find a new game
AOE4 is trying to push and funnel someone into competitive multiplayer. Maybe someone just wants to play around with the campaigns, map editor, and role play in skirmish mode? Maybe if they do go into multiplayer, they hang around the noob brackets? They wall up, and research everything, and probably lose to someone with experience. Did they have fun?
70% or so of the RTS audience has tended to be people who show up for the campaign. It should be a full game given someone just would like to play offline. The AOE4 campaign is really dry. and doesn't follow a hero story. Just comparing the AOE2 Braveheart Tutorial to the AOE4 Tutorial......there is miles of distance.
People didn't get into Starcraft or Warcraft RTS for the competitive mutliplayer. They enjoyed the game and stuck around. People playing around with Warcraft III, fan made mods, they launched DOTA, which launched League of Legends, and so on. Why were people there in the first place? They enjoyed the base game.
One of my favorite game modes in AOE2 was Regicide on mr.fixitonline.com. It would be FFA where things were slowed down, and diplomacy happened. You cannot do that with AOE4?
Do You have any proof for Your statements? - "The majority of RTS gamers show up for the campaign" "70% or so of the RTS audience has tended to be people who show up for the campaign."
How does AoE4 try to push someone into competitive multiplayer? If I want, I can play campaigns or skirmish mode, and just ignore the multiplayer. same as previous AoE games or other RTS. I do not know what do You mean with role play
Yes, it does not follow AoE2 template and does not have 1 hero protagonist (like in real history), and... it is good. It follows the certain historical period, as a history enthusiast , I consider AoE4 Hundreads Year's War campaign better than AoE2 Joan of Arc. AoE4 campaign is far more interesting than AoE2
Few missions are streamlined, but otherwise AoE4 campaigns are great.
AoE2 William Wallace is good only because of nostalgia,
Just compare with other "big" RTS title - Company of Heroes , it is big name, good gameplay , and the playerbase is not bigger than AoE4
Tempest Rising looks great, I am thinking about pre-order, whwn it will be available, and I share same opinion with You, if Tempest Rising will have 10k players after a year of release, it will be big succes for it.
If somebody is curious, it is up-coming RTS in "classic" Command & Conquer style

which other platforms??
Iron Horse as a point here tho. Presentation-wise, AoE 4's campaigns are superb but they have several shortcomings:
Ornlu did a detailed analysis of the AoE 4 campaigns. Note, that there's some bias as he has an AoE 2 background but imo he nails it - feel free to watch it as it's a bit longer :)
