is this similar to war selection?
Is this similar to war selection? Does it have randomly generated maps where you build up and develop in a similar way to that game? Does this game play differently (in terms of building, can you place things where you want? such as walls or housing?)?

I have 600 hours in war selection. They are similar in many ways but also not.

In age games the maps are not completely generated like in war selection, but still are to a degree. Age of Empires has map archetypes that will have variations from each seed with things like resource spawns but will have the same general terrain layout.

Age of empires starts you off with a town center and a small amount of workers just like war selection in age1 (stone age). You gather resources and freely build your base same as war selection and then age up, same as war selection.

War selection borrows many aspects from age of empires and other games.

I think their biggest difference is how team games play out. In war selection you have many more players for one and then you have 'front line' and 'back line'. etc. Age is more uniform with how players spawn around the map.

I would also say age of empires is much more competitive and fast paced and BALANCED compared to war selection.

i don't know about that game at all. I can say about aoe4 that when you make a skirmish game vs people or the ai, you have a 'megarandom' option which is a random map. You can even replay them if you re-use the same randomizer seed. Other maps are more set in their design, but even they have some randomness.

Things are on a grid in aoe 4, but doesn't feel like it sometimes, because people can walk in between buildings. Walls are more you place wherever you want, they don't have to be grid aligned.

Building a base and army in aoe4 is like most rts, like the other aoe's, starcraft, etc.

to me war selection is a more chill game. I really prefer watching competitive aoe4 though.

If you are interested in seeing some good recentish competitive games check out this set from the winter team championship semi-final
