french = if you like knights/cav
english = if you turtle or like defenses. they also seem to not need much resources later, as their farms can make gold
the above 2 are perhaps the easiest.
holy roman order = if you like strong infantry and wololo when you wake up every morning
mongols = if you are good at raiding and keeping constant harassment, they gain resource bonuses for destroying stuff. if i was good at them i'd play them, but i'm more an ottoman person.
Open the Tech Tree in the game (click LEARN and you see it) and see which description gets your interest. They are all rated from 1 to 3 stars by difficulty (1 star is easiest).
Videos to learn from?
Check out Beastyqt for guides. Incog for gameplay analysis (underrated content creator).
Aussie Drongo, KillerPigeon, Mr. Merlin, etc., for gameplay casting.
EGCTV (YouTube and Twitch) for videos of big money tournaments ($10k to $300k).
aoe4world.com for stats (units, techs, etc.), ranks, leaderboard. It many tools, like the Twitch Video Finder for streams by pro players for every matchup possible to learn from.
Do the Art of War challenges in the game to learn the basics. Not needed if already experienced with another age of empires game.
Look around YouTube or Reddit to find answers to almost any question.
I for myself prefer English as beginner, they are cheap and very defensiv.
But as written in the comments above, I would also recommend to play the art of war and such stuff!

Than try to do "civilisation mastery"
I reccomend to start with French or English or Holy Roman Empire
The typical game time in aoe4 is around 15 to 25 minutes. The game plays faster than aoe2. You will finish most of your games within 40 minutes with any civ.
Actually, times are similar because AoE 2's in game time runs 1.7 times faster, so 40 mins in AoE 4 is 1 hr 8 mins in AoE 2.
Strategy: go for the economy and blacksmith upgraes, but not too fast
And not just the how to play ones....I watch the pros too to garnish lil tips and habits.
My AoE2 games used to last 25 to 45 minutes in real time, I haven't played it this year, but I'm sure nothing changed. I'm sure the real average stats is similar to my experience. Aoe2 plays slower.
