I was thinking the same but I am pretty sure Byzantines will be add as the first paid DLC. I was surprised by Malians over them but still a new Civ is always welcome.

Forgotten didn't take over, they were already involved prerelease and mainly responsible for the Art of War missions.

I've played a lot of AOE3 and trust me guys, you don't want Forgotten Empires anywhere near AOE4.

Actually, Forgotten does a decent job with AoE 2 which itself is no surprise as they started with their own mod for that game.

Yeah I concede they have done a good job updating AOE2, and even AOE1. However, at the end of the day, AOE2 is still a basic game from 1999 which is less demanding on developers. You could feel the difficulties FE had adapting to a more modern 3D masterpiece such as AOE3. I think a modern AAA game like AOE4 would be completely out of their depth.

Because why not? whats the point of such a ridiculous question.

its just not interesting. byzantine has what? cataphact? and good ships? bunch of walls? this is not aoe2 where you can just add bonus here and there and called it 'unique' civ. Meanwhile Ottoman are super vast military prowess. and Malians used to be the richest gold empire of all time. they can explore way more

Plus we dont need another Holy Roman. as you know byzantine is Roman and we already have a Holy Roman Empire civ

Yeah, it's AoE 4 where all civ have the same generic tech tree + unique stuff gets added on top which causes less uniqueness.

Where was it confirmed Forgotten Empires took over from Relic?
Lotor13 Aug 24, 2022 @ 9:04am

Forgotten posted on Twitter a while ago that they are recruiting for AoE 4 leading to some people believe that they take over development. In fact, Forgotten was already invovled pre-release but mainly for balance and Art of War missions.

I'm pretty sure Forgotten is helping out, Relic is still at the helm though.
