Lol, how do you remove things from a control group?
Dumb question, yet I can't seem to find the answer to it any where.

Click the ground => Press Ctrl + number

Then it will override the control group

Select something new for your control group.
Ctrl + a number
This will overwrite the existing control group. Whatever was in that control group before won't be anymore.

I don't know if there is a way to just clear groups.

Sadly both answers are only helpful if you want to get rid of the control group completely. In that case you, yes, deselect everything and Ctrl+# to assign "nothing" to this group.

If you want to remove a type of unit from your control group, you click with Shift on that unit type in your UI when the group is selected. Unit type gets deselected. Now you can Ctrl+# to overwrite your group with new group without that unit type.

If you need to make only one unit type and get rid of all the others you can select your countrol group, Ctrl click on this unit type, which will deselect all the others and press Ctrl+# to overwirte control group.

If you need to remove particular units, you can Shift click on them on the field to deselect them, then press Ctrl+# to overwrite.
