But if you are going to play competitive multiplayer RTS are often the most difficult games in the world.
It is very simplistic...sadly...if you ever played aoe 2...it is a dumbed down version that has less to offer....enough so that is not worth spending time on....I would recommend aoe2: DE version over this, for now...or sup commander
IE: The old unit production queue used in AoE games, and starcraft, for some reason, every time you click for a new unit you spend the extra resources just to leave it in the queue, instead of spending it when the training starts, so it encourages you to move all over the map producing a new unit in every barracks every 15 seconds so you won't waste resources on queuing and instead get to build something else imediatelly.
Also, what people call a need to micro armies is often just poor or non existant army AI, like archers all shooting at the same target, killing it with 3 arrows and shooting 25 more into the dead body unless you spread them all and/or aim them all individually, when the AI could just spread out the shots on their own and not waste additional shots on a target they know it's going to die, all menial tasks that don't require any thinking at all, just faster clicking, and it's a relic from the old age of RTS when programing and game design ideas weren't very advanced.
That being said it's not like RTS, a dead genre, have many modern counter examples, I mean, some people are still playing archaic games from decades ago due to the lack of new products so~
Except AoE 2 (and 4) were always about build orders. They were just figured out over time. In case of AoE 2, it's quite useful to know a generic 21 pop build + one or two others so you can change flexible between them
Playing semi competitivly on the ladder ELO 1300+ ?
easily need 200h+ to be able to do that.
playing really competitive on the ladder (ELO 1600+)
you need more than 1000h as a new player
Beat intermediate AI in skirmish ?
everyone i know even though they are bad @ RTS could do it first try.
Playing AOE4 on a low level is not hard
playing AOE4 on a high level is extremly hard
Its in every single game, just maybe named differently.
Which can be said on almost every competitive games out there, be it AoE4, Starcraft 2, (insert MOBA here), PUBG, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Hearthstone, Tekken, Street Fighter, and so on.
The minimum skill requirement for a classic RTS game like AoE4 is a bit higher than most since there are a lot to learn to be able to play semi-decently unlike FPS, MOBA, or fighting games (MOBA is originally a mod for RTS anyway).
Short answer, it's not as pick-up and play friendly game like others.
i played starcraft broodwar competetive in leagues(BWCL) und ladder (PGT,ICCUP,WGT)
I can tell you 18 years ago it was all about macro and multitasking.
same as in AOE 4
@zycat
i agree
Ignorant lmao
Not hard to learn, but hard to win if you want to play PvP.
Strategy gamers are clinically insane when it comes to anticipation and speed.
Gamers hate to lose. People that play these Relic games will eat you alive. In the end you'll resort to complaining, like everybody else.
Most gamers that lose while playing video games blame their losses on the game itself and then join the masses in the forums to bicker over balancing.
Buff this. Nerf that. That's all these Relic games ever amount to.
The only full gameplay footage that I watched of this game had one of the players start complaining about balance at the 20-minute mark, then he dropped out.
After that I watched one more match of a rush, and I'd had enough.
I spent a decade playing these games and nothing ever changes. Same patterns, over and over, whether in-game or in the forums. Not only that, but this is a remake of the same damn game. There is zero incentive to even want to try it.
Lack of innovation and imagination x 1,000.
