I am pretty decent but far from the best. This works for me most the time with HRE in 1v1 and 2v2s.
Oh and also, git good.
The ai can produce a lot of knights or units in general. Much more than you. The only way to even the production ratios is to take out their villagers with cheap cavalry
Rus fast castle horse archer is the problem.
Mangudai hard counter knights
He's 100% correct here. I barely see any Mongol using mangudais in 1v1s, the typical Mongol aggression tends to be dark age spears/scouts, followed by feudal archer+rams, followed by Lancers+Archers+Springalds in castle age.
Additional quick tip: If you find yourself being the defender and not the aggressor while playing mongols, you need to up your aggression and lean more into your civilization's unique quirks focused on producing cheaper military than the enemy and controlling the map.
At low levels of play, the mangudai player is gonna mess up the micro and then the knights will kill them.
It was just a random explanation in a vod but Beastyqt had a good explanation for why mangudai are bad at high levels. Basically, they're just gonna kill vills in that massive period before mangudai finally force them to back up, and when you actually hit a mass of mangudai large enough to deter knights, they just switch to archers and your mangudai are basically useless.
I always start with 2 lancers in dark age, hoping to kill one worker then in age 2 i do 4-6 mangudai, hoping to get more workers down and then i just completely go on lancers and bows after i have explored the siege tech at my obo to build rammers, but then i have to counter agains knights and i loose everytime
