If you pause. It is not RTS.........
Having pause never disqualifies a game from a RTS. You can't deny that all the games under "RTS using active pause" in this list (including AOE2 and 3) are REAL-TIME strategy games, can you?
The following two features define what REAL-TIME games are:
1. You and your opponent can make decisions at the same time. There is no distinction between "first-move" and "second-move" players (as opposed to "I-go-you-go" turn-based games).
2. The time is continuous, not discrete. A player can give orders at ANY time (as opposed to "We-go" turn-based games).
P.S. In multiplayer games, it makes sense to disallow or have some restrictions on how many pauses a player can make. But for solo games, adding pause is a Pareto improvement.
My suggestion that this option is not a part of gameplay and everybody should use it to stop and think but that it's reserved for extreme cases such as disconnections, small breaks, etc.
Just look at Dota 2 and how pause button is implemented there. If a teammate has some problem, he can pause the game and ask to wait a bit and in case opponents don't want it they can cancel the pause after a short time and also, you can't pause frequently.
Anyway, IMO there should be at least option to reconnect and some small time period for reconnection.
