Game development is no rocket science, even if it seems so to you.
And argument is about art, not using C# over C++ or, Flowfields over A-star or some particular algorithm for AI.
Art, everyone with two working eyes can see and compare against hundreds of other RTS games.
And it's terrible. Especially since part of AoE series people love, has always had very beautiful art. Sure, AoE and AoE2 are isometric 2D. But even there, they have fantastically pre-rendered units and buildings, tasteful palette on map terrain and pleasing variety of decals and trees. And AoE3 jumped onto 3D ship, for no real reason other than to make game look even better. So despite the earlier, limited technology, past games have always tried to look as impressive as they could.
And no one can really argue that what we're seeing on videos is barely an improvement over Age of Empires III, a game from 2005. Meanwhile, calendar shows 2021, and that very Relic Entertainment has made gorgeous, lifelike games, like Company of Heroes for example. Which is from 2006!!!!
Argue when you have a real argument. If not, go back to Fortnite or minimalist mobile games or whatever. You being fine with sloppy work doesn't mean world can't demand quality. Some people are like that, they'll live in a pile of manure, wear dirty clothes, never wash, never dream and be perfectly happy with it. Doesn't mean they get to dictate how rest of humankind should move on. And if Relic/MS wants to turn AoE into such ambitionless, mediocre trash, they're in full rights to do so. But fans that have been loyal to the franchise for decades have full right to complain.
Lazy devs, cut features and lack of creative implementation and lack of knowledge on craftsmanship. Then speak corporate turd.
These so called influencers are a bane of gaming , ♥♥♥♥ these useless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who are lazy ♥♥♥♥♥ but cannot do a real job and give them a fancy name "Content Creators".
Doesn't even have skill set to work in municipality.
This is the root issue here. I've seen it mentioned a ton.. These companies don't care about how you played AoE 20 years ago lol. The devs of that game are prolly 50-60+ years old now. They don't make games and new products and think.. Hmmm.. what does the small niche of old time gamers want to see in our games.
no lol.
They want to cater to and try to get-in with the younger crowd or the kids now. They don't care about what you did decades ago and take that into consideration lol. That's not life or how things work. They want it to look more 'app like' and colorful because that's where the kids are and a lot of young adults. Not the old crowd lol..
Analogy...
I loved Hockey growing up.. I lived for it..Literally... Old school bad ass NHL Hockey. Some guys didn't wear helmets, full hits center ice were fair, slamming people into the boards and breaking the glass was daily, chasing after icing pucks, etc etc. game was amazing, brutal, and if you didn't have huge balls and no teeth go play something else. period..no one cared about the cry babys and whiners... this was Hockey in my day.. Then around 2000 or so the game drastically changed with rules. Now the NHL is basically grown men politely skating around each other scoring goals and apologizing afterwards compared to what i used to like and enjoy. Its hot garbage now. Its like sarcastaball from South Park and I cant/don't watch it in 15 years.
do they care? no. they catered to the new and younger audience and whats was being accepted at the time. Companies want to 'sell' to the up and comers, not the old timers and going outers.. thats how it is. either except that and find things you do enjoy in place of what used to be, or complain all day and be old(er) and miserable.. like what this AoE4 forum has become.
Your call. have a good one
Its like em, making steaks for a town where people are vegetarians, you can try to make steak out of a different animal, like chicken, cow or pig. But people won't eat it, because its fundamentally wrong for them. And try meat of a sheep, is not a solution in such situation, but thats exactly what they are doing.
Yes, its nothing personal just the money.
But the issue is, they do it very wrong. I mean if you want to get "younger audience", maybe you should make what "younger audience" wants, and they don't do it either.
As it did show with dozens of similar project alike Red Alert 3, Age of Empires online, Rise of Legends and Dawn of War 3, there is no audience for the game they make right now.
Microsoft had already made Rise of Legends for Casual /E-Sport audience, the game sold one-third as many copies as its predecessor Rise of Nations, that was made for the RTS audience. We are literally talking here about at least 66% less income, as the evidence did show it all the time of period of last 15 years.

It is simply going to repeat or turn out even worse.
Even that wouldnt make sense since there are way bigger RTS games with more units and more details. And normally to avoid problems DEVs simly add graphics options for players to adjust. But since this is what they show its probably high or highest settings - how will low look like?
This is pretty weird there is a lot of negativity and a lot of people defending animations and graphics that simply arent up to what people expect from a big developer in a well known game series.
The interresting thing is - looking at all those forums there arent actually that many threads - is there no interrest for this game or is this also a marketing problem (there wasnt much information for a long time if i remember correctly?)?
It's not about "games". It's about franchise called Age of Empires. They could call it Idle Clicker Cartoon War Legends 2 and release on Android and nobody would give a crap.
Franchises are different. If you go to McDonald's, you expect some level of quality, taste, some menu items that are staples of McDonald's. Like Big Mac burger. You don't care that chain is 81 years old or who's leading the company right now. You go there for particular things. Like the fact that they sell burgers and fries. Or the taste of the Big Mac. Or whatever.
If you went there, and found out that there's no burgers, they're selling car parts or furniture or whatever instead, first, you'd feel cheated and second, that'd be the end of the franchise.
But also if they sold you Big Mac, but it had terrible sauce, stale bread and cold, frozen patty. "Big Mac was warm and tasty in 1968. Cooks who made it are 60-80 years old now. We don't care about your memories lol, we cater to new generation now". What?
AoE games have similarly set expectations - or expected level of quality and effort put into it, and of course people expect it to come along with advancement of technology and age.
"We guys" are already sad. What the hell is this thing looking at us from trailers?
The reason for the graphics change is more likely to attract "average" players, the kind that mom and dad think it will be cute to buy for their children or just several nice of people who grew up playing Fortnite and Minecraft.
