fear of pvp
this is gonna be weird but should i just queue into 1v1's or do team matches to learn how to play against real players? i can comfortably beat intermediate bots as the Abbasid but this is like... the liminal threshold for me at this point.

I think the best thing to do is play vs AI and look up and sort of study Build orders etc-- after that you would need to keep in mind the build they are going for and what not. I would stick to Coop AI, Finish up the masteries so you can get the gist of each Civ then dive in to PvP.

I find 1v1 less stressful personally.

1. Play against AI until you can comfortably beat Hardest one.
2. Play team games (many casuals there so the transition should be smooth).
3. Switch to 1v1 when confident, though competetive players frequent that mode and you might (will) be crushed.

You need to figure out if you're a 1v1 or team player. I personally prefer and excel more in 3v3. As I tend to get tunnel visioned on certain parts of the map. 1v1 can be a lot more micro intensive for map control.

Thank you! ill most likely work on the hard ai then move onto 3v3/4v4's. i do focus on booming then helping my team

Personally I'd say 1vs1, because team games don't show up your weakness as much. You can be carried by the other players more. Also in a team game if you have little idea of what you're doing your not just screwing yourself over but your team.

That's just my point of view on the matter. However practice some vs AI, learn your civ, so you're not having to read tool tips in the heat of a PvP match. Researching builds can also help, though the meta is somewhat in flux at the moment since the game is so new. A good build this week might be bad next week.

to add to this, this shouldn't dissuade you from keep on keepin on if you get crushed a lot. As long as you are noticing that "Okay, he is raiding me at this time and this happens usually happens in general--" You should note that and look into build orders and counters.

First technically speaking you can get very good without ever touching Ladder, but most people aren't capable of doing that , because they don't have the proper learning system developed , the discipline isn't there and the level of analysis is lacklustre, so learning with "the body" is what they do.

Don't take it too seriously , you never win more than 50-60% of the games even if you're good in your skill range/class, loss an integral part of the experience. You just have to accept loosing streaks.

Pick a build and play it to the best of your ability , don't get housed and continue producing workers and you will do better than 60% of new players.

I have terrible ladder anxiety , but it's always only the first match after that there is no time to feel anxiety.

Just do 1v1. There is no ranking system yet, so who cares if you lose.

Yeah do 1v1. I've almost never played MP in AoE2. I jumped in Campaigns in AoE4 and after finishing them all I decided to try MP. I've played 10+ games both 1v1 and 4v4 and currently I've never lost! But even if you do lose it's alright.
